I am proud to present my second collaboration with The Establishment Brewing Co. (Alberta Brewery of the Year, 2023) after many months of patiently waiting for the release date.
It's a true honour and pleasure to be working with my favourite micro brewery.
Below is my statement for inspiration of my design + about the beer.

The design for Cherry Coloured Funk primarily came from the continued documentation of structures around the city of Calgary. This deserted mid-century house is the centre point of the artwork and a continuation of my interest in abandoned architecture. The small candle-like flame in the chimney is a symbolic gesture that the structure is gone but still remains. I took some formal inspiration from the artwork the Cocteau Twins included for their single (Cherry Coloured Funk) and included a splashing, wave-like form on the left, rising above the house. The balloon-like forms on the right is an installation found at The Platform in Calgary, slightly abstracted, to give the piece lift and undulating lines to contrast the straight, geometric edges of the house. Sprinkled with a little “digital dust” above the chimney the idea is to give the work a complimentary formal characteristic that overall adds to the fun or funkiness of the piece.
About the beer: Bright, bubbly, and popping with cherries, this funky riff on a Belgian Kriek is a little sweeter and more complex than last year’s beer by the same name. This year we swapped a third of the sour cherries for sweet ones and arrived somewhere beautifully reminiscent of spiced cherry pie and amaretto. As with last year’s spin on a Belgian Kriek, we used Lambic-inspired beers for the base and refermented the lot of it on loads of whole cherries for a real long time—hence the hue.
