Home Team Sounds recently released Crawford’s Down To Move on vinyl, and at Friday the 13th’s RR Party at Flicker Bar you can get your copy. I know because I’m traveling with 5 of them that I was supposed to mail back to Las Vegas after a Nashville visit, but didn’t.
I’m not about to steal Sweet’s thunder by revealing his heavy-hitting band members for this gig, but if you’re dying to know, slide into his DMs or shoot him a text.

Before leaving Athens for Nashville in 1999, I met Clay Leverett through Orenda Fink. The two of them played my “Moving To Nashville” gig at the High Hat — Clay on drums, Orenda on bass, Bob Todd on guitar, Lew Card on mandolin, Phil Estes on electric guitar, and Peter Smith on banjo.
Somehow Clay escaped being in any photos that night, but at some point during the show, Clay and I traded hats— so at least his hat made it into a photo. I’m also including one I snapped of Clay and his wife Jenny wearing my hat during a 2014 trip to Athens.
Over the years, Clay and I have stayed in touch, and I’d help him with Nashville gigs whenever he wanted to come to town. He’s one helluva singer — whether belting it out with Lona or crooning with his country band, The Chasers.

We’re excited to have Annie Neeley join us to sing some backup vocals and a real swinger of a duet, but you won’t want to miss her set earlier in the evening to witness some West Virginia magic.
I’m going to go ahead and request her song “Old Scratch,” which begins with the line: “Old timers say / we’ve been damned since the day.”
And to repeat myself, plan on the whole damn thing. It’ll be a strong night of songs all the way through.

Lew Card is an original member of the Feather Explosion, my first band. He’s also a damn fine songwriter and picker.
In the early aughts he made his way down to Austin, Texas, where he watched countless condos come out of the ground — something Nashvillians know all about. Along the way he played a lot of music, honed his craft, and ran with the best of them.
These days he’s back home in Chattanooga, but on Friday the 13th he’ll be in Athens, Georgia for the RR Party.

For my very first gig, we played the Hole In The Wall during AthFest. I made this sandwich board out of yellow poster board with cardboard reinforcement, then found a good parking space right in front of the bar for my ’76 Camaro and attached the sign to the hood in hopes of luring folks inside. Figured if people were wandering around looking for live music, maybe we’d catch a few of them.
When showtime came, I jumped through the open sliding glass doors behind the stage and burst through a paper screen I’d rigged up to project a Super 8 film as the lead-in to our set. Or maybe it was a slide show. I tried both back then.
We played Hole In The Wall twice back in those Athens days.
Hole In The Wall is now Flicker Bar, and that’s where we’ll be on Friday the 13th this month for the RR Party with Jason Crawford, Clay Leverett, Annie Neeley, and Lew Card — celebrating issue No. 50 of the RR zine I’ve published every Friday the 13th since 1998. The stage has moved since then, but maybe they’ll still let me come and go through those sliding doors for old time’s sake.

The cat’s out of the bag! To celebrate RR Issue No. 50, we’re taking the RR Party back to where it all started — Athens, Georgia. Even better, it’s happening at the bar where I performed for the first time, once known as Hole In The Wall, now Flicker Bar. The stage has moved, but the Washington Street address is the same.
The line-up is stacked. Athens’ own Clay Leverett will kick it off, blending rock ’n’ roll and honky tonk with the Classic City’s best voice for both. The Sweetman himself, Jason Crawford, will bring the rockin’ swagger — Athens roots, nearly two decades in San Francisco, now simmering in Sin City. Backed by her husband Dave Kirkpatrick, Annie Neeley of West Virginia will let her powerful, deeply expressive voice tell the story of the literal and metaphorical places she calls home. And Lew Card, a member of my first band the Feather Explosion, will trace the long road from East Tennessee to Austin and back, songs in tow. All told, it’s a real revelers’ reunion.
And if you’re new here, what’s RR? Every Friday the 13th since 1998, RR is the zine I’ve published to chronicle the self-made country legend of D. Striker — through stories, song lyrics, cartoons, games, and more — all while skewering and saluting Nashville and country music’s past and present. The RR Party celebrates each new issue.
