#Repost @field_school with @make_repost ・・・ We are so incredibly excited to share research we’ve been working on for years with you: our team has discovered a great hammerhead nursery off the coast of Miami! You can read the open access paper, or watch the amazing video (supported by @naturetrustoftheamericas , and filmed by @brianmoghari , @filipe_deandrade , @thecomforttheory ). Link to the full video in our bio, and we’ll be sharing shorts clips all week. #PROJECTBABYHAMMER #miamisharkproject #womeninstem #sharkweek #shark #sharks #elasmo #hammerhead #nursery #babyshark #fieldwork #wildlife #nature #marinelife #ocean #marinescience #marinebiology #miami #florida #soflo #saltlife #research #education #exploration #RVGarvin

Go to wegotthevote.org/finesandfees and donate to help pay court fines that are being used to keep ex-felons from voting in Florida. The recent court ruling holding up this requirement is a modern day poll tax and overrules the will of Florida voters who overwhelmingly supported restoring voter rights in 2018. #Repost @flrightsrestore with @make_repost ・・・ Updated: FRRC has paid over $3,000,000 in fines and fees among Florida returning citizens! Thank you to all who have supported or donated to our fines and fees program! If you owe court-ordered fines and fees, apply for assistance today! /ffp/⠀ ⠀ #OurVote #OurVoice #OurTime #Amendment4 #FLPol

📣Big Announcement📣 I am so overwhelmingly excited to share that our team’s work on hammerhead nurseries in south Florida is now being funded by an @insidenatgeo research grant. I cannot fully express the joy and gratitude I am feeling right now to be working on this project with this team. We'll be sharing more about #projectbabyhammer soon so stay tuned! In the meantime you can check out the team of incredible people involved in this project, including one of my favorite humans ever @drcatmac who is an inspiring leader in this field and an incredible ecologist, @leucasloki a badass telemetry expert, @grove_archeologist who is a master at using media and communication to drive conservation and @whysharksmatter , a social media wizard and amazing scientist working at the intersection of science and policy. If that weren't enough, we have the whole brilliant and unstoppable team @field_school including @hello.i.am.baldwin @jake_jerome14 @thepernismightier working to conduct this groundbreaking research while creating education opportunities in the field. I am also forever grateful to the people who have believed in us and this project, helping to make it possible, and fighting with us to protect these species and this precious natural area, especially @naturetrustoftheamericas @wilkins_mrm @rebecca_badger @torilinder @filipe_deandrade @brianmoghari and all of the people who have supported and helped our team over the years including all of our incredible students ❤❤❤ 📸: @filipe_deandrade #insidenatgeo #sharks #hammerheadsharks #babyshark #womeninscience #womeninstem #natgeo #gratitude #savesharks

Action speaks louder than words, but we do have a few words to share. Science that is “colorblind” is science that is racist, because it ignores the racism shaping scientific spaces, research, and thinking. Neutrality towards racist systems is racism. “Staying out of controversy” right now simply means being on the wrong side of it. We cannot opt out of the choice between right and wrong. If you were already actively working towards justice before recent events, thank you. If you weren’t, it’s not too late. We are products of a racist society. That means we’re all racist, and we have to choose to actively unlearn it. Many people are sharing great resources where you can learn more about becoming anti-racist. It’s hard but vital work we should all be engaged in. To our Black students and colleagues: you matter deeply to us. We love you, we support you, and we’re taking action following Black leadership as part of that support. If there is anything we can do for you, or that you need—be it someone to listen or practical resources—please just let us know how we can help. We’re here. And until the day this goes without saying in this world: Black Lives Matter. Links to resource are posted in the comments below. Photo cred: @cliff.hawkins

I’ve been messing around with watercolors while trapped inside. This is based on pic I took in one of my favorite little towns on the island of St. Vincent. Looking forward to getting back there someday soon! #quaratinelife #watercolor #scienceandart

Happy #earthday everybody! If my work in Miami has taught many anything over the last several years it is that nature isn't just in remote, far away places or enclosed in a park. It is all around us, and we have a responsibility to care for all of it. This lovely yellow ray (Urobatis jamaicensis) was swimming over seagrass patch less than a mile from downtown Miami. photo: @cliffismia
