Filled my cup this weekend at @artinbloom.dc at @eventsatandersonhouse - a literal dream come true since I first learned about this annual event celebrating one of my favorite things - 🌺 - a few years ago. Anderson house and its beautifully preserved grounds were the perfect foil to some of the must stunning floral installations I’ve ever seen. And of course my flower nerd squee’d at seeing flowers I’ve only ever seen in photos in real life! It was a double treat to see the neighborhood around Anderson House coming to life with camellias, magnolias, and cherry blossoms in bloom. Sigh. My heart is full! 2025 was a year and it ripped me a new one (as I say at the end of every freaking year) BUT as someone who suffers from perfectionism, imposter syndrome and no small amount of anxiety, writing these down felt good and a reminder that I did *something* this year. So if you, like me, made some art this year, I’m proud of you. And dare I say that I might be a tiny bit proud of me, too. What do I want to achieve next year? From concept to completion | Devi and Souvik All the beautiful details that made Devi and Souvik’s ceremony welcome sign extra special! Peacocks were specially requested by the couple and tied every design together. Lotuses made the centerpiece of a bouquet of wedding flowers - hibiscus, marigolds, jasmine, banana and mango leaves. And, to tie it all together, we made sure to include an ode to both Bengali and Tamil culture through alpona, fish motifs, sun and moon motifs, urlis and vilakku - the traditional and unmistakable brass and bronze diyas that dominate so many Indian celebrations. All of the beautiful details that made up Devi and Souvik’s wedding day stationery! Every element was handrawn on @adobe Illustrator, colored on illustrator and @procreate , and arranged on Illustrator and @canva . We incorporated all of the things near and dear to them - Bharatanatyam and tablas for our talented dancer bride and her equally talented musician husband. My first favorite color as a child and still my favorite after all these years. Something so incredibly visceral, raw and powerful in red and all her shades - brick, blood, crimson, claret, rust, ruby, sindoori, flaming. Every shade instantly conjures visions, textures, feelings - exactly as colors should. Red is such an integral part of South Asian cultures - anar, altaa, hibiscus and madhumati flowers, both vibrant and muted across textiles and crafts like ajrakh and jamdani and kanjeevarams. Red reminds me to be fierce and feminine and embrace myself fully and relentlessly, to show up and to stand out the same way the color does. South Asian motifs in jewel tones - reminiscent of the precious stone frescoes found all over South Asia and around the world ✨ I started studying and drawing South Asian motifs as soon as I got back from India a year and a half ago - which coincided perfectly with adding illustration and design to Drishti and learning Illustrator.
