Of course, throughout the year there are concerts, shows in crowded bars, smoky backrooms, dubious drinking holes and dilapidated buildings. But festivals possess a magic all their own, especially the ones that stretch across two or three unforgettable days. For a brief moment, you wander through a better version of the world… A place where strangers smile at one another, where people dance without hesitation, and where freedom seems to hum in the air itself. Music becomes the common language, the heartbeat behind every shared moment and every surge of all that wonderful energy. Next up for me personally, Sonic Whip Festival. Today actually. No less than 211 albums received votes, but as always, only forty are published. And those forty and all those others you already discovered or will in the near future, are there to offer you some respite and relief in a world full of constant upheaval. Getting lost in these records might allow the listener to release pent-up, excessive emotions, leading to emotional, spiritual, or intellectual relief and a balanced state. Perhaps the entire world should start listening? FRIDAY FREEBIE – @vangrooverband VAN GROOVER – BACK TO THE SHOP When the news broke that these fun cats decided to stop the van and stop the groove, I was all sorts of sad! But when the news broke they would continue on again! Well, euphoria all over! Tour dates for all the lucky Germans are already on their Facebook page. It’s legendary VAN GROOVER! And this is a Friday Freebie for their 2023 EP Back To The Shop! Welcomed on the 2023 September Doom Charts Back To The Shop is like stoner metal on overdrive, snarling with punk-sludge venom and desert-rock swagger! Yihaw! Speed-freak riffs and hulking grooves barrel through psychedelic dust storms, veering into bluesy, southern hallucinations, all captured in gloriously filthy do it yourself chaos that feels like a broken van roaring straight through your skull. There’s that euphoria again!! @joopkonraad12 (@stonedhive ): “It lasted a year. The van. And after 365 days and many miles, it needs to go… Back To The Shop! It’s the age old story of every band and van owner, returned from the garage, it is only there until it needs to get fixed again. Van Groover is finalizing its tale of woe about the tour van and all the adventures they’ve been able to experience because of it. Or not. Either way, the new four track EP brings the story to a close and does so in a stoner rocking, sludge toned and overtly metal way. I’m old. I’m slowly losing my hair. On my head that is. Not on my back of course, it’s growing abundantly over there. Too many details? Sorry, but for some weird reason the opening track on the Back To The Shop EP is called Silverback immediately made me think of that. Thunderous, low riffing stoner rock that has this slicing punk, speed rock attitude to the bass and guitar work. Focused in delivery, it retains the humor the Van Groover three are known for. It will soon get a video treatment, and we are looking forward to see what the boys produced for this." #doomcharts

FRIDAY FREEBIE – @heezerband HEEZER – MUSHROOMHILL BOOGIE TAPES Kippis! We’re still on a Friday Freebie run! And even though we know little Finnish, we do know that HEEZER from Imatra, Finland brings some fine and tasty, grungy and gritty stonerrock! And Mushroomhill Boogie Tapes contains four of those fast paced, feel good, action packed songs! Released in 2023, this is a party starter for a great weekend! South Karelian Fuzzrock at its finest! Kippis! Or as Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist) said: “Raunchy stoner/hard rock with a cool feel-good factor, an often overlooked element these days.” #doomcharts

FRIDAY FREEBIE – @wolfnautband WOLFNAUT – III Were you one of the lucky ones that got to grab a code for that majestic WOLFNAUT album Return Of The Asteroid? We hope so… If not… Get fast and loud with WOLFNAUT‘s earlier album III! That’s right, another Friday Freebie brought to courtesy of those good ol’ boys from Norway! Out since October 2021, on their own Fuzzpanzer label, the album was a favorite among many Contributors and made it to the 8th spot of that months’ Doom Charts Edition. And you will wonder, why am I not always listening to WOLFNAUT? III erupts upon you like a thunderous slab of Scandinavian stoner that blends desert groove swagger with classic hard rock grit. Powerful, live energy making the album crackle, delivering punchy hooks and towering riffs. A wild and wonderful ride for all fans of fuzz, groove and high impact rock! Adam Walsh (Earmunchies) wrote: “Catchy and infectious songwriting that sits somewhere in between the desert rock aesthetics of Kyuss, the pure riff fury of early The Sword and the accessibility of Queens of the Stone Age. FRIDAY FREEBIE – OMBRÉE OMBRÉE – CALVAIRE Another Friday Freebie coming at ya from OMBRÉE! An experimental and avant-garde droning experience that lends noise from black metal and becomes this ritualistic static that will surely strike fear and doubt in the hearts of the most optimistic. Not a springtime album, for the grief-soaked drift will put shrouds of grey all over you. Patient and minimal movement, like an endless drizzle on an utterly overcast day… week… month… His own words: “He would have hated this music. My father died on February 2, 2025. As I said my last goodbye to him, the tolling bells of the village church echoed in my mind, and a composition began to take shape. This album is my response to his death. In mourning, my emotions gave way to a musical rendering of a threshold, the transition between life and death. The emergence of animals and environmental apparitions – the death knell that rang at the village church marking my father’s passing, the howling of foxes at night, the slithering of worms and the wails of peacocks – became omens, weaving the narrative of this record.” @ishallsinguntilmylandisfree #doomcharts

FRIDAY FREEBIE – THE MOUNTAIN KING @tmkdoom THE MOUNTAIN KING – PIKE DREAMS Another Friday Freebie… Damn! For this release the man behind the project started his own label called: Void Key Recordings @void_key . It’s the one and only THE MOUNTAIN KING! And his Pike Dreams release. Out since March, this is like a slow-moving meditation on history’s lingering scars. The expected heaviness is abandoned for instrumental soundscapes of fragile synth work, distant drone and muted guitar textures. Each track reflecting on a pivotal year not through narrative, but by spread out atmosphere.. Moments of tension do rise, but slowly dissapate with out grand climax, mirroring the weight of time and all its unresolved consequences. And while all this restraint might soften potential impact, it does reinforce the albums’s central idea: endurance over resolution. Pike Dreams invites quiet reflection… And lingering in the uncomfortable space between all you might remember, decay and what will remain… Their own words: “Genre Description: An instrumental chimera of Dungeon Synth, Doom Metal, Drone and Post-Rock. The album serves as a sonic journey through human lore over the last 2,000 years, exploring themes of escapist rebellion and historical decay. The Mountain King operates as a strictly DIY project and has removed their entire catalog from Spotify in protest of streaming models.
