I’m so impressed with the color fidelity and rich painterly detail in the current print series by artist James Reyman. I’ve collected his work for years, and these giclee prints capture his original paintings’ bold, dynamic presence. They look to me like gouache paintings, capturing brushstroke nuances and subtle color shifts on the pleasing texture of archival etching paper. This hand-signed print is a welcome addition to my limited series collection. Prints are an excellent means of supporting established and emerging talent.

While perusing the bountiful cookbook section at the Union Square Barnes & Noble, looking for the new Zahav Home by Mike Solomonov and Steven Cook (found it!), I came upon the new Does This Taste Funny? cookbook by Stephen Colbert and Evie McGee Colbert. Drawn in by the what’s-wrong-with-this cover photo, I was so pleased to see that the entire book was photographed by the tremendously talented Eric Wolfinger. I’ve worked with Eric and Alma several times; there are none better. When I looked more closely, I saw that the recipe editor and tester is the charming and unstoppable Chris Styler, who I’ve known since first grade. Great work all! #cookbook #barnesandnoble #unionsquare @ericwolfinger@freelance_food_chris@stephenathome #colbertcookbook @mikesolomonov #zahavhomecookbook #cooknsolo #zahav

The Illustrated Man. Interior Desecration is the collected works on design by illustrator Steven Guarnaccia. Original sketches and finished artwork, commissioned for magazines such as Metropolitan Home, Abitare, and Domus, were on display last night at Salotto, the Italian design collective in Williamsburg. The delightful design writer/editor Julie Lasky interviewed Steven as pages from the book flashed behind them. His work lives at the crossroads of word- and image-play, and as Met Home’s Design Director I gave Steven his own monthly “column” to freely compose his witty visual puns. Editor-in-Chief Dorothy Kalins and I also sent him to the Milan Furniture Fair along with editors Carol Helms, Steven Wagner, writer Arlene Hirst, and photographer Antoine Bootz where Steven “wryly chronicled the conceptual exercises.” A sampling of these playful watercolors can be seen in this beautifully designed little book. Published by Corraini Edizioni.

CANAL HOUSE STATION There’s a particular joy that comes from knowing people a long time, being aware of their many talents, and seeing their generosity in play. Our visit to Canal House Station, the wonderful restaurant in a renovated 1870s train depot in Milford, NJ, for Sunday dinner was at once familiar and yet full of discovery. Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton have been working together since they met at Saveur, the groundbreaking magazine founded by Dorothy Kalins, becoming a team that can basically do anything (like producing the James Beard Award-Winning Canal House Cooks Every Day cookbook). Christopher’s a photographer who captures intrinsic beauty, and Melissa is an artist whose charming paintings adorn the restaurant’s interior spaces. Together they cook classic American cuisine through their lens with the freshest local ingredients, at a table set for friends. It’s a bit like traveling a few hours in an elegant dining car. One afternoon there, feeling welcome, letting the marvelous prix fixe dishes arrive, chatting with others just as happy as you, and you’re reminded of things that count, how good people can be, and how lucky we are.

COLD STARTS is a vintage boutique celebrating motorcycle culture. Curated with style, wit, and lots of local references, it’s a fun stop at 64 Main Street in beautiful Cold Spring, NY. Owner Michael Hardman is an art director and an avid rider, and found a way to combine the two. The kind of clarity one gets from time spent on curvy roads.

Fantastical, Data-Friendly & Funny. Hogpen Hill Farms is the 234 acre artistic playground of Edward Tufte, Yale’s Professor Emeritus in Political Science, Computer Science & Statistics in bucolic Litchfield County, CT. Still wonderfully curious, this world-renowned data scientist is also a data artist. My art director pals @jamesreyman and Joe Dizney and I had a great day touring this sculpture park. We then had a wonderful conversation with Edward, veering from Bob Dylan to Feynman diagrams and how to welcome extraterrestrials properly. We’re ready now! Hogpen Hill Farms is only open weekend days through October. Tickets are by carload, so pack the SUV!

PAINTED MEMORY When I was Assistant Art Director at New York Magazine, Design Director Robert Best asked me to create this brushstroke version of the magazine’s logo for the “Children In The City” cover story. I’d drawn many small illustrations and type dingbats for our stories, but this was a bit scary since: 1. It was the cover, and 2. It was going to the printer in two days. Spotting this, Robert said “Don’t worry, we’ll do a test version first.” Smart man! He knew this would free me up.
I painted each color on separate mylar sheets using black India ink, and spec’d the brushstrokes in the three primary colors (Red, Yellow, Blue) and one secondary: Green. When we saw the proof, I said “OK, I’m ready to go for it.” Robert said “You’re done!”
How delighted I was to see this almost 40-year-old logo artwork back in play on this handsome New York tote. And how funny to see these colors now referred to in The Strategist as the “Kindercore” movement. Did we start that?
