We'd like to welcome Sylvester Ndumbi to the DOC Alberta Board. Sylvester joins the Board with unique experience and will serve the remaining year of a previously vacant seat. Bio: Sylvester Ndumbi is an award-winning filmmaker and producer with over a decade of international experience creating premium unscripted and scripted content. His work has screened globally and engaged audiences at the highest levels of policy, culture, and entertainment. Most recently, Ndumbi was invited by the United Nations to present his upcoming documentary, War on Carbon, in Brazil, a major international recognition of his leadership in climate and energy storytelling. His previous documentary, Without Leaving Anyone Behind, was selected as an official UN side event at COP28 in Dubai and has since achieved global distribution. Beyond production, Ndumbi is a sought-after speaker, regularly participating on panels around the world alongside global thought leaders. He also serves as a Board Member of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, where he helps steward significant public investment into the province’s creative sector. Combining creative ambition with proven execution, financing expertise, and international production success, Ndumbi brings the leadership and discipline required to serve and contribute to the growth of unscripted work in the province.

Story Money Impact is now accepting applications for our IMPACT MENTORSHIP program, designed to support documentaries in later development by underrepresented creators. Three projects will be selected by a jury to receive personalized support. Each selected film will receive 10 hours of impact coaching in May & June 2026, helping the team strengthen their strategy and better position the project for meaningful impact upon completion. Application deadline: April 15th at 11:59 PM PT

Together we bring you two important documentaries from right here at home that highlight what can emerge when community and passion combine. Stories awaken, art takes shape, and movements gather momentum. The Eastern Slopes  Feature Presentation | World Public Premiere Community members and experts from Lethbridge and southern Alberta unite in ongoing resistance against coal mining in the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. The extraction threatens the health and livelihoods of communities while international corporations and governments actively re-write the rules. Directors: Erin Rolfson, Graham Ruttan | Canada | 2025 | 51 min | English  Yolkless Press  Short Intro  Risograph originated in Japan during the 1980s, and a new movement of artists are redefining this printing technique, including Yolkless Press based in Calgary, Alberta. This short documentary highlights their artist-driven projects centred around the Asian diaspora experience, and how they provide a much needed platform for underrepresented voices. Congratulations to DOC Alberta members @scoreg and @waughwaugh__ on being finalists for the Edmonton Film Prize and continuing to contribute to Alberta’s documentary filmmaking scene. The Edmonton Film Prize finalists were recently announced as part of the 2026 Edmonton Arts Prizes, celebrating outstanding local filmmaking talent. This year’s shortlist features three compelling projects, including "Tootoo", produced by Adam Scorgie, and "The Secret Long Tree Society", directed by Colin Waugh, alongside Simon Glassman’s "Buffet Infinity". With a total of $100,000 awarded across disciplines, the Edmonton Arts Prizes highlight the strength and diversity of the city’s creative community. The Film Prize winner will be revealed at the awards presentation on May 4, following public screenings of the nominated films at NorthWestFilmFest.
