LIFF is honoured to announce the LIFF Legacy Audience Choice Awards 2026, presented by the first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society. With the first society now closed, LIFF is honoured to officially take on the name The Lethbridge International Film Festival.
The origins of the first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society date back to 1985, initially developing its programming alongside the World Citizen Centre. 2005 - 2025, the film festival–organized by a small group of volunteers - presented a variety of thought-provoking international films in partnership with the Lethbridge Public Library. In 2015, the group was incorporated with the Government of Alberta as a registered society, with a mandate to organize an annual festival of outstanding international films for public viewing and discussion.
The first Lethbridge International Film Festival Society has now shut down and wants to take this chance to express gratitude for the support of the Lethbridge Public Library, the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Polytechnic, the Community of Southern Alberta, the discussants, and the volunteers over the last four decades.
Continuing its dedication to supporting both the art of filmmaking and the filmmakers themselves, the Society offers cash prizes for Audience Choice Awards at the new Lethbridge International Film Festival.
As part of #asianheritagemonth and @inglewoodyyc 's InglewooDIY Festival: In Every Nook and Cranny, we are excited to present Việt Kiều Vol. 1, a pop up art show at @barbienailandmassage from May 22 - 31, featuring works by @sanrioashtray , @eks.rei and @dny.lu ! 🇻🇳✨
Việt Kiều is a colloquial term used by Vietnamese nationals to refer to individuals of Vietnamese descent living outside of the motherland. Việt Kiều Vol. 1 features three local Vietnamese-Canadian artists whose work is connected through dialogue about what it means to be born inside of this collective diaspora. By placing the work within a nail salon – an environment frequently run by Asian immigrant women, we are able to subvert and challenge audiences by highlighting the tension that exists between labour and the art that comes through the sacrifice of prior generations. It is a testament to the generation of women and their quiet endurance that these spaces foster community, a sense of belonging, and the survival of their families.
Join us for the FREE opening reception on Friday, May 22 from 6-9PM! There will be a whole roasted pig and pandan cake to celebrate! Be a part of the show by booking a pedicure or manicure at Barbie Nail & Massage during the reception! 💅🏻
Huge thanks to Inglewood BIA, @crawlspace.gallery and @vickivee for making this show possible!
Support our local artists and businesses! 🙌🏻✨
DOC ALBERTA DOUBLE BILL
Saturday, April 18th, 11:30AM | Viewing Gallery | Galt Museum and Archives | Akaisamitohkanao’pa
LIFF is thrilled to present its first screening in partnership with DOC Alberta. Together we bring you two important documentaries from right here at home that highlight what can emerge when community and passion combine. Stories awaken, art takes shape, and movements gather momentum.
The Eastern Slopes
Feature Presentation | World Public Premiere
Community members and experts from Lethbridge and southern Alberta unite in ongoing resistance against coal mining in the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. The extraction threatens the health and livelihoods of communities while international corporations and governments actively re-write the rules.
Directors: Erin Rolfson, Graham Ruttan | Canada | 2025 | 51 min | English
Yolkless Press
Short Intro
Risograph originated in Japan during the 1980s, and a new movement of artists are redefining this printing technique, including Yolkless Press based in Calgary, Alberta. This short documentary highlights their artist-driven projects centred around the Asian diaspora experience, and how they provide a much needed platform for underrepresented voices.
Director: Vicki Van Chau | Canada | 2025 | 18 min | English

Award-winning Canadian filmmaker and improvisor Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi is producing a feature-length documentary that takes a deep dive into the revolutionary Loose Moose Theatre, the Calgary-based improv institution that redefined improvisation, influenced global comedy, and fostered generations of comedic talent. This documentary will explore how a small theatre sparked a worldwide improv movement, just in time for its 50th anniversary in 2027.
But we need YOUR HELP bringing it to the big screen! We’re launching a Kickstarter to raise $25,000 by May 18 to make this happen!
This isn’t just a film about comedy. It’s about community. About taking risks and failing.
Expect laughter. Expect real stories. Expect a behind-the-scenes look at the magic (and chaos) of improv life.
No scripts. No retakes. Just real moments.
If that speaks to you, we’d love your support!

Every dollar gets us closer to capturing something truly special — a love letter to improv, Loose Moose and the people who make it all happen.
Let’s make sure this story gets the spotlight it deserves!
We had a fantastic time hosting our first Movie & Mahjong night last week. We’re so grateful for the incredible support that allowed us to sell out within a week. We also appreciate the mahjong coaches who generously came to help us learn. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the City of Calgary Chinatown Activation Grant.
I have a feeling we didn’t have enough time, and we could easily have played for another hour or two. Do you think we should consider doing this again? 🀄️
As we ring in the Year of the Fire Horse, revisit OFF TO THE RACES featuring the song HORSE RACE (with some new arrangements by @legato_gelato and @notorious.msg !) and played by 72 musicians from around the world! Produced 5 years ago during the pandemic with @calgarychineseorchestra , this was such a fun project to work on! 🐎🔥🧧✨

Excited for the premiere of the @yolklesspress doc this Thursday at @albertauarts ! Can't wait to share the works of @neondaandaan , @areum.geem , @stephwongken , @jadjdjajdja , and @hungryzine who trusted me to tell their stories! 🥚📖
I wanted to give a huge shout out to my dear friend and co-editor @stevechinyyc ! When editing this doc, I got Covid, and became overwhelmed and felt paralyzed at a really difficult time in my life. He stepped in and helped me tell this story when I couldn't find my own voice. This doc would not have been completed without him! Thanks for always keeping me on track, whether it's helping me with the edit or on set as my Assistant Director! 🥹🙌🏻
And as always, thanks to my DP and partner @ap_owain , who is always game for watching my edits for the gazillionth time in the wee hours of the night, when I'm the most neurotic. 🫠
You can check out my other films that a lot of the crew on this doc helped me with, at the @ikg_auarts exhibition FACES & PLACES, that will be open until 8PM on Thursday! So come down early (doors at 5:30PM), check out the exhibition, buy some Yolkless publications, and eat some snacks with us before the screening! 🤗✨
This project has been generously supported by @afa.1991 and @calgaryartsdev ! 🙏
I'm so excited to finally premiere my @yolklesspress documentary featuring my dear friends @neondaandaan and @areum.geem , as part of the FACES AND PLACES exhibition at @ikg_auarts ! They will also be launching a new issue of COLONIAL IMPORTS co-edited with @stephwongken , who also makes a guest appearance in the documentary!
Come down to @albertauarts on Thursday, November 6 for the FREE screening! Doors open at 5:30PM to check out and purchase the new issue, as well as taste some snacks that were reviewed in this new issue! This will be followed by a reading by @amandarraquel , and the premiere of the documentary in the Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre. We will end the evening with a Q&A!
Huge thanks to @hungryzine and @jadjdjajdja who also make an appearance in the documentary, and my trusty team @ap_owain , @arty_void and @ramin_eshraghi_yazdi for capturing their stories!
This documentary also features cute animations by @jarettsitter and a fun film score by @gingerbeefband !
Hope to see you there as we celebrate the talents of some pretty awesome Alberta artists and writers! :)
This project has been generously supported by the @afa.1991 and @calgaryartsdev !
I'm so honoured to be part of @ikg_auarts exhibition FACES AND PLACES curated by @takpham , as part of @albertauarts 's 100th anniversary this year. It's so exciting to show my work along so many other amazing alumni and peers that have made such meaningful contributions to Calgary's art scene! 🙌✨
An opening reception will be taking place on Sept 18 from 5 -8PM and the exhibition runs until Nov 22.
A few of my short films will be shown in the group exhibition, including the premiere of my short doc about @yolklesspress on November 6, so stay tuned for more details about that! 🥚📒
