I genuinely did not know this was going to happen. This ward was not supposed to fall. The machine said it was a two-horse race. The data said stay humble. And then 1,776 people in Ancoats and Beswick decided otherwise.
I am still processing it.
Manchester Greens won massive numbers of seats across this city today. This is not a ripple. This is a wave. Communities across Manchester looked at what was on offer and chose something different. Something that actually reflects them.
To everyone who put a cross next to my name. To everyone who knocked on a door, sent a message, shared a post, had a conversation. To a team that gave everything. Thank you does not cover it.
Ancoats and Beswick. I am your councillor now. And I will not forget what that means or why you trusted me with it.

This is not an accident. It is the result of decades of political choices made by parties who prioritised markets over people. And we are all living with the consequences.
The Green Party is not just here to protest that reality. We are here with a plan to change it. That is what got me elected in Ancoats and Beswick. That is what nearly 17 Green councillors across Manchester are now here to push for.
Hope is not enough on its own. But hope with a plan is where change actually begins. 💚

We will remember them.
Took a moment to stand here quietly. After the campaign, the count, the result. All of it fell away for a minute and I just stood here.
Remembrance matters. Every single life lost in conflict matters. The soldiers who fell in the wars we commemorate with poppies. The civilians caught in the middle of conflicts they never chose. The children in Gaza. The families in Sudan. The people in Ukraine. Every innocent life ended by war, wherever it happens and whoever wages it.
I do not believe in conflict hierarchy. I do not believe some wars deserve our grief more than others or that some lives are worth more mourning than others. The moment we start ranking whose suffering counts, we have already lost something important about our own humanity.
As a newly elected councillor I will always hold that position. Every life has equal worth. Every loss deserves to be remembered.
We will remember them. All of them. 🌹

Concilio et Labore. By Counsel and by Labour.
Manchester's motto. Adopted in the age when this city was the engine of the world. Counsel meaning wisdom, planning, governance. Labour meaning the sweat and graft of the working people who actually built everything around it.
The coat of arms behind me carries the three diagonal gold bars of the de Grelley family, the medieval lords of this manor. Centuries of history pressed into stone above the seat of modern civic power. A reminder that this city has always been shaped by those who held authority and those who challenged it.
I stood in this chamber today and felt the weight of both sides of that motto. The counsel part is now my responsibility. The labour part is what got me here. Doors knocked. Conversations had. Communities that decided to trust something different.
Ancoats and Beswick sent me into this room. I will carry that with me every single time I sit in it.
Councillor Salem. Green Party. The work starts now. 💚
