@thecohortnyc put together three groups of film makers in which we had to make a no budget short film with total strangers in 2 weeks, from concept to post. Our assigned genre was romantic tragedy so we had fun with it and went over the top on the humor. You all probably know I love lighting gags so here’s my favorite clip from our film called Paper cut! It’s the quintessential moment where an outsider walks into a party and instantly sees a girl she likes. Co-directed by 👋 & @tomdunk Cinematography by 👋 Talent: Chris Brady This clip is a timelapse sequence, where after a relationship ending quarrel, the only thing the love sick main character can do is spend the rest of his life waiting for his love to come back. This shot was ambitious. Timelapse on film is so challenging especially with timing all the manual lighting changes. Our gaffer Martin was physically moving lights as Matt, our grip, dimmed them according to a beat we established. In loving memory of Chris Brady and Martin Whittier. Co-directed by 👋 & @tomdunk Cinematography by 👋 Talent: Chris Brady This clip is the introduction to our main character who is walking through a world that feels rustic, rural and blue collar with bedsheets hung on a line, blowing dry by wind and an added tinge of dystopia with mechanical car parts spread across the lawn. We wanted him to feel like an Everyman when addressing the crux of the story, the morbid feeling we can’t shake when we experience an unrequited connection “would they be there to bury me?”. The walk was meant to feel enduring, he knows that when he walks through that door his relationship to the woman he loves will change. We accomplished this by booming upward on a jib while pushing in on a dolly track. With the Aaton eye piece closed, gaffer @martinwhittier followed me with the monitor which was only able to display a fuzzy black and white 720p image as I walked the track operating camera. This was also testing for our focus puller Andy Kuester, who had to pull focus by eye. Though challenging, the process of shooting film is incredibly rewarding. Everything was to sway like jazz and build sexual tension on a first date. Stills from “Just A Little Longer”. This series is Diego's side of the story. Through a baseline of low key depression, we follow Diego from initial optimism to anxiety ridden analysis paralysis, to just feeling sorry through @fruco101 (Joaquin Pittaluga) expressions. The butt of the cigarette is the only warm tone, a glimmer of hope, which represents Shani. The glimmer is so small, it gets put out. First set of stills from my short film “Just A Little Longer”. In this series you get to see how the tone changes when a long distance relationship begins to fall apart as we follow Shani’s descent into resentment and hopelessness within @stalinared expressions. The lighting changes, after she puts her candles out in frustration of being left hanging on her plans to meet up with Diego. I’m beyond excited to be named among such amazing cinematographers for the Altitude Awards! This recognition for technical and artistic achievement in cinematography is a true honor. On a personal note, seeing my name for first place on the big screen brought me to tears. In that moment it felt like all the years of hard work was starting to pay off. I always hoped it would, but I never expected it to, and like many of my fellow film makers I have kept grinding at it non stop no matter what. I have always believed in my self and spent my entire career betting on myself by taking risks and I know my small film community in Baltimore believes in me, but I never thought the big dogs in Hollywood believed in me too. It's so hard to stand out amongst so many other talented people. To have this extra bit of encouragement, makes a huge difference. I also carry the weight of family expectations to succeed. My parents moved to this country with a few suitcases of clothes, not knowing the language but determined to give me a life with opportunity. Today I am living my version of the American dream, making a living doing what I love. This award means so much to my family, thank you for making them proud.
