𝗧𝗥𝗬𝗣 𝗜𝗜𝗜 | DJ /rupture DJ /rupture (Jace Clayton) is a musical nomad whose practice spans continents, genres and sonic cultures. A DJ and turntablist since the mid 90s, DJ /rupture first made waves internationally with the genre-melting Gold Teeth Thief mix, layering hip-hop, Middle Eastern tones, and dancehall - named as one of the “50 Records of the Year” by The Wire in 2001. Known for his mastery of clashing genres and diversity of sound, since then DJ /rupture has continually blurred boundaries, inviting listeners into global soundscapes where rhythm, resonance and radical listening rule. Next Saturday, 11.22 at Roulette, Jace Clayton @djrupture revisits his 2013 album The Julius Eastman Memory Depot (@newamrecords ) which engages with the daring work of gay, Black, pioneering minimalist composer Julius Eastman, who was influential in the 1980s Downtown NY scene. Like on the original recording from Merkin Concert Hall, Jace will be joined by pianists @manzoemily and @davidfriendgetsloud , live processing Eastman’s music from their two pianos through his laptop using custom-built digital tools. The show, The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner, is part of Roulette’s Music For Two Pianos series - tickets at roulette.org! gem video of Jace in 2017 at @bigearsfestival talking about the project “I interpret the open-ended, irreverent nature of Julius Eastman’s legacy as a call to conversation….Reverence can be a form of forgetting.” —Jace Clayton

For Surround Sound, Ryan C. Clarke, Jace Clayton, and an ensemble of improvisers will consider bass as a feeling and a sound—a source of propulsion or foreboding, a tool for merging bodies or shaking bones. In conversation, Clarke and Clayton will address bass as a figure for the subterranean, sublegal circulation of Black culture, but also as a characteristic that distinguishes between genres: The double bass in jazz serves as a timekeeper and harmonic ground, while the echoing, elastic riddim of Jamaican dub stretches time. “To put it another way,” Clarke asks: “What isn’t a subwoofer in Black culture?” Clarke and Clayton will share the stage with cellist Dorothy Carlos, drummer Buz Donald, bassist Brandon Lopez, and experimental musician Kwami Winfield, who will respond to the conversation through improvisation. Surround Sound will take place on Saturday, October 11, at 8:00 p.m. All symposium programming is free to attend and will be livestreamed. Visit the link in Triple Canopy’s profile to view the full schedule of events and RSVP. *** The 2025 Triple Canopy Symposium is presented in partnership with Critical Minded and hosted by Roulette. Worker Coffee will be on site selling coffee and tea. Tapes, publications, and wares will be available from PTP. Beverages have been graciously provided by Grimm Artisanal Ales, Narragansett Brewing Company, and Zev Rovine Selections. Media sponsors include BOMB, Boston Art Review, e-flux, and The New York Review of Books. @criticalminded_community @roulette_intermedium @negrolith @djrupture @dorothycarlos @indybuz @bantlopez @_._kwami_._ @worker_coffee @ptp.vision @grimmales @gansettbeer @zevrovineselections @bombmag @bostonartreview @e_flux @nybooks

Kazakhstan gratitude post! Beautiful time in a fascinating city. Thanks to @annedavidian curator of the opening program of @almatymuseumofarts earlier this month. My DJ set turned into an unexpectedly lively party, reconfiguring the space as only dancing can. Next night was the Sufi-inspired spectral ‘Midnight Practice’ 🌚 convened by Anne, with @andriusarturian @tomokosauvage @k.o.k.o.n.j.a . and others, which turned the museum into an open-ended house of sideways sound, not quite a concert, not quite music, not quite collaboration. I played modular synth (Beads, Blades, Maths, Ears) on a staircase for this one, patching setups that worked with @makpal.manasbay kobyz & the throat-singing & drum improvisation from a member of the @steppesons . Earshot / sonic bleed / late-night hearts. Can’t wait to see what @lace.inga does next with the museum. Pics: hotel, “always ask for a room with a view”, circle dance closer, Compton barber, Red Bar, the 3 non-Serra artworks are from @almagul.menlibayeva delightful retrospective, my name transliterated into Russian.
