Last Saturday, Consul General Christine Moser attended the opening reception of “Alfred Preis Displaced: Viennese Modernism in the Tropics”. The exhibition and accompanying publication, curated by Prof. Axel Schmitzberger and Dr. Laura McGuire, highlight the extraordinary life and work of Austrian émigré architect Alfred Preis (1911–1994), from his formative years in Vienna to his pioneering architecture in Hawai‘i, including the iconic USS Arizona Memorial.
The traveling exhibition, accompanied by a comprehensive 274-page catalogue, showcases nearly 200 built and proposed projects, emphasizing Preis’s integration of Viennese modernism with tropical climates and local traditions. The exhibition also explores his commitment to elevating society through thoughtful design and social responsibility.
This event celebrates the lasting impact of Austrian émigrés on international culture and provides a unique opportunity to engage with Preis’s rediscovered legacy. In this case, it is thanks to the dedicated work of Prof. Axel Schmitzberger and Dr. Laura McGuire that the life and work of Alfred Preis are brought into the spotlight, preserved in collective memory, and introduced into the international canon of modern architecture.
