🏆 We’ve won! 🏆
Super proud to say that last night Disco Scallops™ was named Food Innovation Winner 2025 at the BBC Food & Farming Awards.
@dan.saladino said it was the multi layered storytelling and different chapters of the project that drew their attention and gave it the win. The science, the research, the fishermen, the comms, and the restaurants all coming together to make pot-caught scallops a real possibility for conscious consumers.
It was a truly brilliant category, with 2 other incredibly important food innovations (and all from the Devon and Cornwall too!) which makes us even more proud to have won.
This one’s for the boats, the chefs, the scallops… and of course you all for eating them and loving the stories!
Now who’s going to look after this chopping board then?!

We’re the new kids on the block. We’re building a different way to catch scallops; one that works for fishermen, chefs and the future.
It’s early days, but the momentum is real. Right now we need more fishermen. More fishermen = more pots in the water = more Disco Scallops™ on plates, which ALL equals less destruction to the seafloor.
Simple.
Swipe to see what we’re up to and how you can help.

World Ocean Day is next month and it deserves a proper toast. Ours involves Mark Hix (a chef who truly understands the sea), the beautiful setting of @cherrytreefarmcampsite in Croyde, and a vinyl soundtrack with dancing under the stars.
@markehix will be cooking a procession of Disco Scallop small plates, each one a little casefile for fishing done differently. Wine poured from @sandridgebarton and disco tunes from @vinylheartsclub . It’s sure to be a beautiful night, ideal for any discerning seafood lover who want to raise a glass (and a scallop shell) to the sea this World Ocean Day.
6th June from 6pm. Last fee tickets available from Cherry Tree website

Oh and these are @discoscallops - so called because they're lured into traps by bright lights and Gloria Gaynor played on a loop*. This way, they don't disturb the seabed, unlike traditional dredging🪩
Full recipe in my new cookbook Fired Up ☀️
*One of these statements is not true, sadly.
Scallops are the Food of the Sea!
Pulled up our new Disco Pots and they were full of Scallops!
Very happy with how well they are working!

Our latest blog is live! Why not give it a read over a coffee? It explores the problem with scallops in the modern day, and crucially some of the ways we can change that...
For centuries, fishing seems to have had one direction of travel: efficiency. Bigger boats, longer trips, heavier gear, more sea covered, more stuff taken out. The logic was seductive in its simplicity: maximise yield, maximise profit. The problem is the ocean doesn’t work like a spreadsheet, and we’re all starting to see the bill.

When scallops are this fresh, you don’t need to cook them.
These are Disco scallops, and when they’re this good, a ceviche with blood oranges, coriander, spring onion and chilli is all you need.
It’s the kind of dish I love putting together at my Kitchen Table in Lyme Regis, and it only works when you start with something this beautiful. That’s exactly why I use Rockfish. Comment ‘scallop’ below to get the recipe, or head to the Rockfish website to find it there.
Disco scallops, anyone?
I genuinely thought they tasted better, with the novel approach used to catch them and the low impact to the planet. You can buy them online to cook at home, and keep an eye out for them on restaurant menus too. I got sent a stash to try when I featured them as a disruptor in a @goodfoodeveryday feature.
They only need a couple of minutes on either side in a hot oiled pan (I used neutral oil). Taste the dressing as you go and serve immediately. A lovely story to share with dinner party guests!
