Back in late April, when Chicago begins to oscillate between releasing her talons’ winter grip and teasing us with spring, I found myself in my 8th month of living alcohol free with a lot of nervous energy and no real outlet. I put my clothing business Kangmankey on a self-imposed hold, weary of the production trap I had caught myself in: mass producing the same 10 or so items with no drive to really design. Desperate to find a new creative well to drink from, I began researching different quilting processes to utilize the 20+ year mountain of fabric I had been dragging around. My one restriction was: Only use what you have.
Deep in a YouTube rabbit hole I was introduced to Pojagi, a traditional Korean technique utilizing felled seams to create a reversible textile from scrap fabric. I started digging into Mt. Fabric, cutting complimentary pieces in various sizes and began piecing together a new-to-me textile. Pojagi scratched an itch I hadn’t been able to reach before. It melds my love for experimentation, scrappy DIY ethic, and a varied production process that keeps my brain soaked in dopamine. I fell in love with how intuitive the composition came, and that it required many different work stations (piecing, cutting, pinning, stitching, ironing) that kept me from getting swallowed up by monotony. 90 or so hours later I had my first compete textile. As I come upon a year without drinking, I feel so electric with what will emerge as I dig deeper into this process.
PS: I also quit my shitty job, please send any leads you think would be a good fit!
Big shoutout to @differentanders for taking most of these photos, your guidance and endless encouragement 💕
Thank you @differentanders ❣️ Asunder/满地残阳 is in many ways about witnessing and keeping company through change. We met each other at the cusp of a transitional state in both our lives in 2019, where we've dreamt and grown our artistic practices in very intertwined ways. For this solo exhibition, I wanted to turn back and examine this journey and discover something new about myself. Grateful for Anders in putting so many beautiful words to paper that help me better understand my work.
Grateful also to Mark Porter, in the shared spirit of making important things no matter what and especially in spite of change, for helping bring this catalogue to life and facilitating this release event. @studentspacescolumbia
Couldn't keep a straight face due to @totally.doomed antics behind the camera but the that's prob the secret to the glow lol

MotherTwin is the creative partnership between Gurtie Hansell @kangmankey & Kate Fernandez @unrelatablecreep 👯♀️
We run a small production design company from our home studios in Chicago, working closely with local musicians, filmmakers, screenwriters, directors, and performance artists. Our focus is on creating visual assets for video projects and immersive cultural experiences. We specialize in sourcing second-hand clothing, deadstock fabric, and repurposed materials to craft unique design solutions that support storytelling and world-building. Through costume, set, and prop design, we help bring artistic concepts to life. We’re a real fuckin treat to work with and fun at parties too! Take a peep at the linktree in our bio to see what we’ve been up to for the last 5 years.

⚰️🪦 I was recently interviewed by the @blockclubchi to talk about @chicago.death.doula.collective , @thecoffincards and the work I’ve been doing the last couple of years including my father’s passing. Comment or DM me “Doula” and I’ll send you the link. I also invite you to join us for our next Café December 28 from 4-6pm if you’re in town.
I’m so proud of and grateful for everyone at the CDDC who made this possible. The current and past board members, everyone who’s attended a death cafe or bought a set of the coffin cards. Thank you all so much. This work is incredible special, important, and transformative. If you’re not already following CDDC please do and stay tuned for all our upcoming events.
“What role has bargaining played in your grief?” This question took us all to so many places. The way we make deals with god, make sacrifices, and trade and barter our time for a better life and a better end for ourselves and others. You had to be there. You can be for the next one. Thank you @differentanders and @burialblankets for inviting me to co host such a great café. 🪦🤍
