Back in late April, when Chicago begins to oscillate between releasing her talons’ winter grip and teasing us with spring, I found myself in my 8th month of living alcohol free with a lot of nervous energy and no real outlet. I put my clothing business Kangmankey on a self-imposed hold, weary of the production trap I had caught myself in: mass producing the same 10 or so items with no drive to really design. Desperate to find a new creative well to drink from, I began researching different quilting processes to utilize the 20+ year mountain of fabric I had been dragging around. My one restriction was: Only use what you have.
Deep in a YouTube rabbit hole I was introduced to Pojagi, a traditional Korean technique utilizing felled seams to create a reversible textile from scrap fabric. I started digging into Mt. Fabric, cutting complimentary pieces in various sizes and began piecing together a new-to-me textile. Pojagi scratched an itch I hadn’t been able to reach before. It melds my love for experimentation, scrappy DIY ethic, and a varied production process that keeps my brain soaked in dopamine. I fell in love with how intuitive the composition came, and that it required many different work stations (piecing, cutting, pinning, stitching, ironing) that kept me from getting swallowed up by monotony. 90 or so hours later I had my first compete textile. As I come upon a year without drinking, I feel so electric with what will emerge as I dig deeper into this process.

🐣🐥18” X 18” throw pillows made entirely from “shattered fabric”: up-cycled, deadstock and scrap materials diverted from landfill. These scarfaced softies are of the same DNA but express it a bit differently.
🧵🪡Made from a mixture of: “classic” blue scuba (neoprene), vintage patterned poly from Gran Gran’s stash, blue and red Hoodie material, upholestry fabric, a black nubby faux wool and denim.
👯♀️Ideally the sisters are sold as a bonded pair, but you can split them up if you must, you monster! $150 Each or $275 for the set.
🐚Shells are easily removable due to its envelope construction. Machine wash cold, hang to dry, cover with a cotton cloth to iron.

I did a super hard thing. Something I was certain that I couldn’t do. But honestly I’m so damn proud. It’s been no walk in the park, like so many will have you believe. It took me at least 6 months before I felt fully comfortable being in public. In the beginning, I honestly thought I would quit drinking and POOF! all my worries, anxieties and emotional desregularían would disappear. Truth is, without “old reliable” there to tamp it down, all of that unprocessed shit bubbled up to the surface. Turns out, it takes quite some time for your brain to re-calibrate. You HAVE TO find new ways to synthesize those healthy feel-good brain chemicals.
Despite having so many bad experiences in the past and feeling pretty critical of what modern therapy has done to us “see: tender queers”, I FINALLY found a practitioner I really clicked with. Rather than validate every thought, action, and suspicion. They actually challenge me. I’m an expert at justifying my behaviours all on my own. I started seeing a psychiatrist too, and got on new medications.
I had to bring in all the reinforcements: journaling (can you believe it?) daily walks in the park, yoga, swimming, I even joined a gym for the first time in my life, I made and actually kept dates with friends. I mostly quit instagram (listen, I only come here now to offer occasional sacrifices to the digital dopamine demons, give a girl something!) I also mainline iced green tea and seltzers. And every day I try to find gratitude in a world that is anything but gracious.

It was my 3rd year anni teaching a 4 day workshop called “Renewed, Ready-to-Wear”, with the most incredibly enthusiastic and creative students thus far.
I turned myself into a Fry Kid for the Friday night dance party! Saw the most astounding sunset. Stayed in the Mason cabin all by self! Took @miwolf156 Time machine for a spin! Tie-dyed a tee shirt with red clay provided by @dove.hornbuckle and made so many cute new queer friends. Can’t wait to tear it up again next year! So in love with you all! 💕💕💕
