First Finisher at the 2025 Highland Trail 550! Coming in at 3 days, 14 hours, 58 minutes. Over the moon with that result after battling it out for three and a half days. It was the hardest event I have done to date. Hideous weather at times. More to follow. @dotwatcher.cc@ht550alan@bikepackingcom photo courtesy of @whisky_trail_angels@therealfoodcafe
A short summary of my time on Dales Divide 25.
The race was split down into three chunks. Everyone was charging out the gates for the first few hours, a large lead group of around 20 riders keeping the pace high. The first steep grassy climb spread us out a little, but everyone kept the foot on the gas. It took hours before the pace settled down properly.
After giving it the beans for the first 10 hours or so, everyone was settling down for the overnight third of the race. Just as I was settling to a more sustainable pace, @alexinthepeak caught me up and pushed the pace back up. Over the evening I managed to open a small gap on Alex and started to catch the odd glimpse of @angusyoung139 ās tail light on the long straight sections. I caught up and we yo-yoed places throughout the night as we smashed through the easternmost section of the route.
With sunrise came the final third of the race and a puncture for me. It took a few attempts to get it to seal properly and I knew I was against it chasing Angus down again. For the remainder of the race, I only caught one glimpse of him, as he finished a hike a bike section that I was just starting. He steadily built a lead throughout the last few hundred k. Alex was still keeping the pressure on me for second and the three of us only finished an hour or so apart. Chapeau boys!
A great bit of close racing over a day and a half. Plenty of learning points to take to the next event. Thanks @dotwatcher.cc for the commentary and tracking, it definitely makes you press on when you know your Nanna is keeping an eye on progress! And thanks to everyone for the fantastic support throughout. Snazzy photos from @ospreyimagery
Salar de Uyuni
At over 100km across, the Salar de Uyuni felt like one massive playground. You can see why so many bike tourers flock to this huge expanse of salt.
Navigating across the salt was easy, aim for the big Tunupa Volcano that stands proud on the far side of the flats. The distances however were deceptive. From the middle, that volcano only ever looked a few kmās away, but in reality took another half a day to reach.
The Obligatory Perspective photos had to be done. But this is not easy, convincing or time efficient when youāre relying on a self timerā¦Significant trial and error was involved in producing a PC and insta friendly result for the required bike tourer - salt flat photo tradition. š

Kms for Kev
I will be attempting to break the record for riding 1,400km from Lands End to John Oā Groats on a folding Brompton Bike, which currently stands at 83 hours, in memory of my mate Kev.
Kev was tragically murdered during the robbery of his motorbike in Kenya. The McCool familyās response to his loss has been stoic and inspiring. Their ability to tackle such a harrowing event and find positivity though the Kevin McCool fund is what has motivated me to take on this challenge for Kms for Kev.
May, Kevās sister, on what Kms for Kev is all about:
āAs a family, we believe that criminality often has deep, complex roots ā and we want to support organisations working to address those root causes. By helping young people choose a different path, we hope to prevent future tragedies that echo Kevinās story. Kevin was a passionate runner ā he proudly represented Ireland Schools at Cross Country ā and believed deeply in the power of sport to bring people together and change lives.
In his memory, an incredible Ā£26,000 has already been raised and weāre just getting started.ā
If you would like to help bring positive through sport, you can donate to the cause at the link in my bio. Grateful for the support to this challenge by:

@dalesdivide 26 didnāt go quite as planned, but I had a good time regardless. Loads of wind and rain kept things interesting and made it a real slog just to get to the end at times.
The first 100km went great. The pack was slightly more settled than last year in these first few hours, but it was hammering it down for a lot of that first morning. I arrived into CP1 in second, just a few minutes after Alistair and happy with how my race was going.
At the 130km point the wheels came off my race. I had the first of many tyre issues. I was losing air and had to keep stopping to get the tyre inflated again. I hoped the tubeless sealant would do the trick, but the wet conditions kept washing it away before it sealed the small hole by the rim properly. A few more stops, a few plugs and CO2 cartridges later, I chucked a tube in and hoped for the best.
I dropped a few places thanks to my bike faff, but started making my way back up the field into second until more bike faff happened and I was another tube goneā¦
Bike faff continued and my focused switched from racing to limping my bike to the end and fighting though the comical headwind that blew in at the end of the race.
Overall, not what I had planned but lots of highlights; loads of support out on the course, getting a cream egg and a can of coke from a strangers, riding though the back of the night shift with @ge.orge , @adampalin joining us for a Greggās trip and a bonus trip to halfords in search of more tubes.
Congratulations to @alistair.brownlee and @justine_bike for taking the wins in wet and wild conditions!

The Kings of the Atlasā trail Morocco Day 1.
Possibly our biggest misjudgment yet on what is suitable to ride a bike over.
Admittedly we could see the snow & could have turned back. but we thought - itāll be alright
Very grateful to a morrocon man who greeted us as we completed the pass and re-found road and took us into his mountain hut to warm our feet. š¦¶š¼ š¦¶š¼
