despite our best efforts the ceaseless march of time continues apace, bringing us to March, which can mean one thing and one thing only, that submissions for drunken film fest oakland are now open! open as hell!!! assuming there's still society in october it'll be be the ninth time we bring a hand-picked selection of the best shorts we found to the best bars in town, and yours should probably be in the mix! and OF COURSE, Bay Area filmmakers can submit for the low low LOW fee of just $5 this first week (that's through the 7th)! But if you're still working on it never fear because our fees stay relatively low throughout our 4-month open call. to submit just hit that ol' @filmfreeway in our bio and send it on over, usual kinda stuff. thank you for your time and attention, and for just being you. you're great, and lookin forward to watching all your movies!!! xoxo gossip girl (lovely panda illustration courtesy of @croutoncoupon , of course)

That only leaves one jury left, and it's the biggest of all, you, many people who attended the screenings and made little rips in pieces of paper. my goodness things were competitive this year, but through it all there was no denying the popular appeal of @jordanmichaelblake 's reclaimed stock footage therapy sesh Paradise Man (ii)! Don't have any comments for this but recall hearing someone say "i loved that little guy!" after Wednesday's screening at @temescalbeer . The people say congrats Jordan! and that's it i guess thats all the winners, thanks so much to all of last year's filmmakers who donated their time and mental energy watching and considering the films, not to mention the this year filmmakers who made them, nor all you wonderful amazing folks who came out to see them, let alone the wonderful bars who hosted them. just a big, sincere, heartfelt, blanket, thanks!!

Selecting this year's US Narrative winner was no small task for @felkercommalori and @daveraige , who had 18 eligible films vying for their affection, and the one they said gets an award is Budget Paradise from Oakland's own @latajh , which closed out the whole fest friday @beeryland_oakland . Lori said it's "very special" and Dave called it "pure art", Woooooo LaTajh!

From close to home to around the globe, next up is World Narrative, juried by @stephenlopez048 and @asuka_bot , who had a lot of great films to consider but ultimately landed on the blistering, and pisstering(?idk.) Water Sports, by @whammyalcazaren ! Asuka said "i love this film, it's got everything" and Stephen noted that "the cinematography and production design was fantastic." This is Whammy's second time screening at dffo in as many years, and we hope he never stops! Great job Whammy!

This year's local competition was the largest of our 8 years, with 13 Bay Area films in competition! No small feat for jurors and fellow local filmmakers @rexshannon333 and Shirin Mori, who're giving this year's award to @happybird722 's sweltering portrait of a cinema, A Brighter Summer Day for the Lady Avengers! Shirin said she was "blown away", and we know everyone at @elismilehighclub on Thursday was too. Go Birdy, go!

Selecting this year's animation award were @karasucassie and @sewingbug_ , who gave the honor to @bl00mfield 's tale of take out and metamorphosis, LARVAL, which fluttered into the hearts of everyone at @the_double_standard on Sunday. Cassie said "the style is showcased in every shot composition and animation choice." no arguments there! congrats Alice!

Everyone knows it wouldn't be dffo without some strong docs, and non-fiction films took up roughly 1/3 of this year's runtime, offering some stiff competition for jurors @azairelovejunt and @emmadmiller 's award. Ultimately, they landed on the enrapturing and heartfelt piece of family auto-bio, Correct Me If I'm Wrong by @_haozhou_ ! Zaire said "this is a beautiful film" and Emma proclaimed "This will stay with me!" and we're sure everyone at @beeryland_oakland on friday agrees with both of those statements! Congrats Hao, so good!

hey! how's it going, how was your weekend? you watch any movies? you better not have! that's cheating. lol jk. anyway we're all rested up and caught up on last week's reality tv so ready to reveal this year's winners of the jury awards! first up, for no reason in particular, we'll start with avant-garde, juried this year by @tanner_masseth and @federica.foglia._ , who had their hands full with 22 eligible films in competition, a record for this category, and they picked the ethereal vision of doppelgängers and alternative plant biology seen at @staygoldoakland on monday, Blossom of Choice, by Oakland's own @tugceevirgen.zmen ! Congrats Tuğçe, yay!

4 nights down, 3 to go, we're over the hump people! which means we're pickin up speed downhill on the road of cinematic ecstasy. not sure what that means exactly but i'll just let the films do the talking, these films specifically, which we'll be enjoying together in this order tonight at @temescalbeer , see you there!
