Devraj Dakoji’s illustrious career spans continents and artistic movements, from Hyderabad and Baroda to London and New York. As a master printmaker at New York’s esteemed Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, a title held by few, he inspired generations of artists and collaborated with legends like M.F. Husain and Zarina Hashmi. A graduate of Baroda’s M.S. University and London’s Chelsea School of Art, Dakoji’s practice combines traditional techniques with innovative methods, shaped by international training at institutions like the Tamarind Institute. His legacy includes workshops worldwide, a retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru (2023), and accolades like the Lalit Kala National Award. Beyond his own work, Dakoji has curated workshops and served as a jury member for prestigious art competitions globally.
From his early experiments in Hyderabad to his global recognition in New York, the exhibition is a testament to his dedication, creativity, and influence in the world of printmaking. In September 2023, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Bengaluru held a major retrospective exhibition of Devraj Dakoji’s work, showcasing over 600 pieces and celebrating his lifelong dedication to printmaking. At 79, Dakoji's artistry, deeply influenced by nature and organic forms, reflects his global experiences.

1960s-1970s
Inspired by the creative brilliance that defined Hyderabad—from the vibrant Tazias during Muharram to the all-night performances of Bhagvatam—Dakoji enrolled in the city’s Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture in 1959, and proceeded to study printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts in M.S. University, Baroda, in 1966.
For the young artist who candidly admitted that, “This was really the first time that I was stepping outside the familiar city of Hyderabad, my home”, studying at Baroda meant access to the one piece of equipment Hyderabad could not provide at the time: a printing press (Dakoji, along with artists Laxma Goud and Surya Prakash had to settle with make-shift facilities in the chatta and raddi markets of the old city, waiting for hours before they could work with a finished print).
In Baroda, Dakoji studied the nuances of manipulating and perfecting the mediums of colour lithography, woodcut, and etching under Jyoti Bhatt, N.B. Joglekar, and K.G. Subramanyan, working alongside senior artists like Bhupen Khakkar and Gulam Mohammed Sheikh.
