@stanglwirt is one of the most magical hotels I’ve ever stayed in. It’s different than my typical favorite resorts, which are usually at a beach. Instead, this family-owned historic landmark in Tirol, Austria, dates back to 1609 and is a mountain retreat that’s a base point for skiers in winter and transforms into a green-pastured family paradise surrounded by dramatic alpine peaks in summer. When we stayed here at the end of last summer, I was floored by the way they interpret a family friendly hotel. Here, kids and adults are both treated splendidly, with plenty of comfort, relaxation, and entertainment for all. It starts with the rooms (slide 3) which are massive and usually include a private sauna (slide 4). The activities are endless, from horseback riding in their elite arena (slide 5) where you can see the majestic white Lipizzan horses they breed for the horse shows in Vienna and continues through the incredible family and adult pools and spas (slide 6 and 13). Kids can spend endless hours at the farm/outdoor play area (slides 7-12). A highlight is the dining, from the insane breakfast buffets to dining in the centuries-old tavern with the cows right behind you (slides 15-17) to the cheese cave they use to age the cheeses they make in an alpine hut in the mountains (slide 18). We were obsessed with the butter dispenser at breakfast (slide 19) and they even send you off with a freshly baked loaf of bread at checkout (slide 20). Flashback to Salzburg last August! What a fascinating and beautiful city with so much history. Continuing on my summer flashback in the dead of winter, we spent a magical two days outside Salzburg at the new @rwschlossfuschl , which is in a historic lodge that looks like a castle on one of the most pristine lakes I’ve ever seen. The art collection was insane (slide 4), our suite was glorious (slides 5-8), the lakefront was a chic alternative to our usual beach (slides 9-10), there was a fun pub-style restaurant in the old wine cellar with fantastic Bavarian pretzels, sausages, and other yummy things (slides 11), while there were fancier restaurants as well (slide 13). We went on a boat ride on the lake on a gorgeous wooden electric boat (slides 15-17) and took a dip with some ducks (slide 18). Continuing on my catch-up up of 2024, last August we took an epic two-week trip to Austria and Slovenia. We started in Vienna, a city we’ve visited before. I love traveling to cities for a second (or third, fourth) visit because it frees you up from the pressure of seeing touristy landmarks. This time, we stayed at the new @almanacpalaisvienna , inside a former palace that’s now a modern art haven (slides 1-4). It’s across the street from the lovely Stadtpark (slide 6), which we enjoyed wandering through. Inside the park is the Michelin-starred @steirereck , where we had a glorious lunch one day (slides 7-10). Instead of the usual art museums Vienna is so famous for that we went to last time, we checked out the more family-friendly @hausdermusik_vienna (slide 5), which had a ton of interactive exhibits. We also took a walking tour of two less-touristy neighborhoods, the 9th district, known as Little Paris, and the 2nd district, the former Jewish district, where Freud’s former home turned museum is (slide 11) and a somewhat hidden memorial featuring the keys from Jewish homes in the neighborhood taken by the nazis (slide 12). This was especially moving for me as my grandfather on my father’s side grew up in Vienna until he escaped with some of his brothers in the late 1930s. The best part of our visit was finding my great-grandmother’s grave inside Vienna’s massive Central Cemetery just outside the city (last slide). She died from a disease before the war started, which is why she was able to be buried in the Jewish section of the cemetery. I really fell in love with Buenos Aires when I visited in May (still catching up!). I only had a couple days for the Paris of South America but I made the most of them by staying at the lovely @casaluciabuenosaires (slides 1-2) and exploring the Recoleta and Palermo neighborhoods, including the famous Recoleta Cemetery (slides 9-11), sampling delicious food and drinks at places like the plant-filled @marti_barra (slide 12) and @elpreferidodepalermo (slide 13), and checking out some of the many awesome bookstores, especially @elateneograndsplendid , inside an old opera house (last side).
