Happy Mother’s Day (A Musician’s Failed Attempt at Being Romantic) Title: Life as a Song The Intro: The song begins in the key of D minor, performed by a fiery curly-haired singer who somehow figured out how to sing on top of the unresolved chord progressions of a struggling musician performing in a “doing my best” time signature to an “I’m lost as fuck” BPM. At first, I found myself improvising with chords could have ruined the whole song. As bad as those note choices were, you always found a way to hit the perfect note. Verse 1: From beat 1, our harmony began the day you held my Sky’s hand to do homework. This was a chord that I didn’t see coming. It was out of key from the song I was used to playing, but that shit inspired me. I countered you with a minor chord by giving you a ride home. You countered with your lasagna landing on a Sus chord that had me in full suspense. What is she going to do next? Pre-Chorus: By this point you began to recognize my patterns. You saw areas that needed improvement, and you quietly began to notice a lot of the players around me were pushing me in a way that diminished me, “Everyone that is here for you are not here for you,” were the lyrics you sang. I heard them, and the music stopped. And though I am not always good at recognizing cues, I recognized yours. Those lyrics led to our first date, a rooftop by the ocean. Our tempo was now steady, but the suspense still lingered for a final measure. I felt nervous. Afraid I would miss the next downbeat. It was beat three of the final measure when I questioned if I was ever in control. With a dominant 7 chord I could C sharp as Our first kiss reminded me that I was never in control because you introduced the leading tone, the harmonic minor moment that perfectly set up our first chorus. Chorus 1: That night we were in unison, soon to be in harmony with Sky. Those we love most began to join in. The song began to feel like an anthem. We are the perfect song performed on a Devine day under the beautiful Sky. All we needed was one more lyric that would end up giving us the perfect Rhyme. This week brought both disappointment and deep gratitude. The same week I was denied entry into the @uscthornton School of Music’s doctoral program, I also experienced one of the most impactful moments of my life and career. I had the honor of helping shape the music for a tribute celebrating two of my favorite producers of all time, @flytetymejam and @flytetymelewis Most importantly, reconnecting with my brothers @adamblackstone and @djaktive reminded me how far we have all come and how much further we are going. Thank you to you both. Thank you @prophet5050 and the entire @bmac_coalition for shining a light on the beauty, history, and power of Black music and culture. Congratulations to the winners of the BMAC grant. Your future is bright. Also @prophet5050 thank you for making my wife @elle_e.d and our new baby girl #rhymerose feel welcome at the @thesunrosemusic Thank you @victoriamonet for a speech that spoke truth and purpose into the room. 11/20/25 at 4:40am we welcomed our little miracle Rhyme Rose Evans 🌹 earthside. Calling this journey a transformative experience would be an understatement. She’s already taught me to face my deepest fears and dig for my deepest strength. Thank you all for your prayers… they were needed and heard and God made it happen. We are thankful to the amazing team of doctors at UCLA that helped us make the difficult but necessary game time decision to have an unplanned c-section that saved our little angel’s life. Thank God for choosing us to be her parents. Late with the post because mama is healing and adjusting🙏🏽

Our not so baby girl Skyler is officially 18!!!!!!! So naturally (as the coolest parents ever😎) we took her to get her first tattoo! Only rule was that it had to represent family. So she chose a flock of blackbirds to represent her, dad, me (bonus mommy), her bio mommy, and of course her new little sister Rhyme. 🐦‍⬛. Now when she reflects on coming of age she will always think of us first! I cannot believe our lil blackbird has left the nest…lol college dorm life and all! We got your back always Fly babygirl… FLY!
