Devin Cowens joined the Intown Atlanta GNPS Board in 2025. She got hooked on native plants and the role each of us play in the ecosystem after reading Nature’s Best Hope by Doug Tallamy. The Outings Coordinator for the Sierra Club by day, Devin is also a connector, community organizer, and Earth Steward. Favorite native plant: Do I have to pick just one?! Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Georgia aster (Symphyotrichum georgianum) What’s the most useful thing you’ve learned in GNPS? Start small - one plant, one place in your yard or in a pot, and go from there. I started with one plant (purple coneflower) and was transformed by the front row seat to nature. In the spring, bees and butterflies pollinate the flowers, and in the fall goldfinches flock to eat the seed heads. You don’t have to do everything at once. Now I’m off the deep end with native plants, but that’s not where I started!

Massive congratulations to our friend Devin Cowens on the successful launch of RAR Bike Shop in Atlanta. “I have been completely transformed by bike joy and the opportunities to learn in an environment where I have felt safe and supported. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to create a bike shop that looks different from others in the area—one that is focused on community, learning, education and joy.” Learn more about RAR Bike Shop at the link in our profile and consider donating in support of this effort if you are able.
