Nudged towards a career in architecture by his father, Perit Ray De Micoli, founder of @demicoli_and_associates , forged his own path in work and life guided by a principle inscribed on a famous Venetian church that he encountered in his 20s – and left a lasting impact. “Keep your measures true and be faithful to your promises,” the saying goes. “And that is exactly what I did.” In our latest episode of StudioTalks, we sat down with the architect and mind behind several iconic buildings in Malta, from Portomaso and the marina to Ramla Bay Hotel, the restoration of Fort St Elmo and, not least, his very own home, to learn about his early years in the field, his 50-year journey in architecture, unforgettable lessons along the way, and much more. “You don’t remove a historic building to get a better view for your residential unit,” says @patrick_calleja on his campaign for the protection of Fort Chambray in Gozo – one of many that the architect has led as Executive President of @dinlarthelwa In an interview with #designdispatch, he discusses his transition from an architectural career marked by culturally sensitive projects such as the restoration of the art nouveau building that houses Lombard Bank, to the front lines of heritage conservation which, despite often being an uphill battle, is a source of great fulfilment. “Twenty years on, despite its controversy, it has survived as opposed to many of my buildings, proving that works of art are more permanent than architecture.” At the time of its unveiling in April 2003, the LOVE monument in Spinola Bay by Richard England was revealed to the public as a playful artwork intended to evoke reflections on the meaning of love. On its recent 23rd anniversary, the artist and architect reflects on its meaning then and now with #designdispatch, musing how, despite its controversy, “the work continues to evoke reactions both negative and positive, but now although it still provokes it also soothes and entertains.” Read the full interview at the link in bio @designdispatch.mt 📸 First image courtesy of Richard England / Portrait by Jake Belizzi / Image by Peter Maede via Flickr

For artist Vince Briffa, his artistic process is defined by extremes - painting instinctively yet also with a certain surgical precision; the physicality of working on large pieces versus the stillness of viewing and studying them from a distance, all of which come into play during the hours spent in his studio. Housed within the Chapel of Saint Peter ad Vincula in the Jesuit's Church in #valletta are three prestigious paintings by Mattia Preti that are set to be restored through a conservation initiative launched by AX Group. Depicting key moments from the life and martyrdom of Saint Peter, the works include Liberation of Saint Peter (main altarpiece), The Martyrdom of Saint Peter (lunette), and The Meeting of Saints Peter and Paul before Martyrdom (lunette), which have formed an integral part of the church’s artistic and devotional setting for generations. Denise Xuereb, Director of Construction and Development at AX Group, noted how the initiative contributes to the preservation of a legacy that forms part of Malta’s cultural heritage, which “requires a careful and respectful approach, ensuring that artworks of this age remain accessible to the public and preserved for future generations.” Read more at the link in bio @designdispatch.mt 📸 @axgroup.mt

“The challenge was clear: conserve the historic fabric while transforming the house into a practical, flowing, and welcoming home,” says Perit Kenneth Rausi of @peritistudio , who led the renovation and restoration of a dilapidated Naxxar farmhouse into a contemporary home that is functional, full of character, and rooted in the existing fabric of the building. Named Dar It-Tarag, the project's design concept was to unify its three wings, organised around a central courtyard, into a cohesive residence. “The property retained significant heritage features, but its fragmentation and poor condition made it unsuitable for modern family life,” says Kenneth. The studio applied conservation best practices at every stage and introduced new interventions that are legible and reversible, including a sculptural concrete staircase described as a defining intervention of this project.
