The spring is summit season and I’ve been on the road! #MakersCircle is one of my favorites. It is a curated group of leading lights who are literally changing the world. You may not know them by name but their impact is everywhere. I had the honor of leading the final session and if you know me…you know I love a mic! 😂 The first pic is of me and my college roommate 🩵 who is also my line sister 💕💚 @deeproctor Who could have predicted we’d both be Makers? The second pic is of @janayshawkins and #alicinwilliamson the amazing curators of Makers and me. I hosted a beautiful lunch on the first day - this photo was from that moment. Have you ever been in a room when someone enters and the air leaves the room and the atmosphere shifts? That’s what happened every time I saw @revjjackson . I was blessed to have been in a few rooms with him. I would be so in awe of his mind that I would temporarily forget that I was there to speak as well. @rolandsmartin , you remember? I also had the honor of being honored by PUSH in 2017. THE Rev. Jesse Jackson honored ME. So surreal and such a blessing. My two guests were my friends Tara Jones and Henry Stewart. RIP friends. Rest well Rev. Jackson and thank you for all that you’ve done for this country. Sending your family prayers and condolences. 🙏🏾
It’s my turn to take a look back at my 2016. I hope it’s not too late. Well, if it is, I’m doing it anyway. (SMILE) Think of it as my Black History Month post because this 2016 was Black history in the making!
In 2016, I was running programming for @tvonetv . In that capacity, I was speaking on stages and sitting in rooms I once only imagined. The biggest accomplishment was being named as one of the Most Influential Minorities in Cable by @cablefax_official Magazine.
I spoke at the Upfronts, sat on a TCA panel alongside @tichinaarnold and @victoriamahoney and spoke at @jalenemack MPAC conference alongside to @kimfieldsofficial .
That year included press runs, the RNC and DNC conventions, and overseeing town halls with Secretary Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders. It meant producing and premiering work I’m still proud of, many of which are currently getting a second life on Tubi - Bad Dad Rehab at ABFF in Miami, Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story, Jean of the Joneses, Here We Go Again, Born Again Virgin, The Next Fifteen, and Rickey Smiley for Real.
I met Former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama while taping In Performance at the White House: A Tribute to Ray Charles. I gave a Black History Month speech at a DC church. I recorded an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. podcast. I attended the Ringside release party. I even made time for joy, like seeing Lalah Hathaway perform with my dear Tara Jones. RIP, friend.
And in the middle of all of that… I purchased and renovated my house in Houston.
Looking back, 2016 was a beast and I’m grateful for it.
I am grateful for the rooms, the relationships, and the responsibility.
