Visualizing the Damage Probability of the Gaza Strip since October 10, 2023. Simultaneously, @spatial_data_candy conducted a scale comparison juxtaposing the city of Philadelphia which closely matches in land area, with the Gaza Strip. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the profound magnitude of the impact in terms of land area destruction and people displacement.
The Damage Probability data stems from Ollie Ballinger’s tool which utilizes SAR imagery. The tool estimates the number of damaged buildings and pre-war population in specific areas within the Gaza Strip. SAR instruments send pulses of microwaves toward Earth’s surface and listens for the reflections of those waves. When buildings have been damaged, the amplitude and phase of radar wave reflections changes in those areas and indicate to the satellite that something on the ground has changed. By measuring the change in radar wave intensity before and after October 10, 2023, the tool identifies the probability of damaged areas.
