Join @cinea_be and @decinema_ in early July for ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026: a week of in-depth lectures by internationally renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers, and screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations! This 31st (!) edition features two diverse programme strands. HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA, presented in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, and demonstrates how melodrama’s versatility allowed it to travel the world. With lectures by Professor Ben Singer (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Dr. Viola Shafik (freelance filmmaker/lecturer/researcher). In CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM, we look for the elusive qualities—mystery, mood, texture, sensuality, etc.—that constitute ‘the poetic’ in narrative film. 📼 VIDEO/TAKE, a brand-new joint series by De Cinema and M HKA, transfers video art and artist moving image works from the small to the big screen. For this first installment during Antwerp Art Weekend, graphic designer Jelle Jespers will present a selection of Belgian and Argentine video works that were shown in Antwerp fifty years ago. Now presented on the big screen for the first time, VIDEO/TAKE #1 features contributions by Jorge Glusberg, González Mir, Alberto Pellegrino, Mirtha Dermisache, Gregorio Klimovsky, Leo Copers, Filip Francis, Pierre Courtois, Hubert Van Es, Lili Dujourie, Roger Steylaerts, and Chris Goyvaerts. This screening connects to the ongoing archival display “Nueva Visión. Printed Matter as Artistic Practice (1940—1976)”, currently at @mhkamuseum , in which Jespers explores graphic design and printed matter in Argentina as a space for experimentation, exchange, and social engagement. Filmed in stark black-and-white, this Indonesian take on 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵 is not a retro experiment but a wonderful re-interpretation of silent cinema as a contemporary art form. This is a unique opportunity to experience this internationally presented work in Antwerp for the first time. For this film concert, leading Javanese singer and composer Peni Candra Rini is joined by musician Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė and by multi-instrumentalist and Prof. Dr. Andy McGraw. Carol leidt het perfect luxeleventje in LA: ze woont in een zotte villa, heeft een loving husband en vult haar dagen met fitness & garden parties waar ze haar sociale rol met glans speelt. Tot ze plots vreemde klachten krijgt waar geen verklaring voor lijken te zijn, maar Carol weet het zeker - ze is allergisch aan de moderne wereld waar geen plaats is voor kwetsbaarheid. “Taipei Story is how I felt about the city at the time; its past, its present and its future.” – Edward Yang In a Taipei that is growing faster than its residents can keep up with, Ah-chen and Ah-lung are losing their grip on each other. She is an ambitious real estate executive with her sights set on the West; he is a former baseball player stuck in his family’s ailing textile business. As the world around them races forward at breakneck speed, their relationship slowly grinds to a halt. Director Edward Yang sketches the alienation in the concrete jungle with the precision of an architect. Just like Antonioni’s characters, Ah-chen and Ah-lung are swallowed up by their surroundings: the gray high-rises and the monotony of modern life leave no room for nostalgia or dreams.
