Injuries in dance aka survival of the fittest?
What have dancers of pretty much any background in common? Injuries, yes you’re right. But why is that so? Let’s have a look at some facts & figures. According to Füger, X. et al. 2018:
•Every 2nd dancer suffers at least 1 work accident per season, every 3rd accident includes an inability to work (depending on the style of dance)
•Chronic or overload injuries occur 3-5x as often as traumatic injuries
•In educations injury incidences increase usually before 9:00 a.m.,after the 6th working hour & generally on mondays
Now what can cause these injuries?
•Insufficient physical preparation during pre-season
•Chronic fatigue by the end of the season (contemporary dancers: Aug-June)
•No deload phases
•High frequency of performances (-> increased rehearsal volume)
•Usually to short breaks during the day (-> reduced nutrition intake)
(Füger, X. et al. 2018)
Knowing that what can we as dancers do to reduce our own injury rate? Besides planning daily breaks & generally adding deload phases, absolute key would be pre-season preparation. Meaning at some point during the year carving time out to physically prepare our bodies through strength & conditioning training, for the daily loads we have to handle.
It‘s fascinating how it’s common sense for everyone that basketball, NFL, soccer players, you name it, physically prepare their bodies in the gym. But interestingly enough many dancers still feel like simply dancing is physical preparation enough. Even when keeping in mind that during jumps the achilles tendon for example needs to withhold loads up to ten times the own body weight (O’Brien, M. 2005). Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying adding physical preparation phases is easy. All I’m saying is that we dancers have loads like any other athlete & we need to be aware of that. Since we don’t have typical seasons in many dance styles, we have to find creative solutions in the planning of our physical preparation. Are you in? Let‘s figure it out together 🤜💛🤛
