A couple of years ago I started digging even deeper into the Bay Area sound and one of the groups that instantly grabbed my attention was Black Dynasty out of East Oakland. Every time I explore this region of Cali I end up discovering another layer of raw and soulful Hip Hop history. The Bay really built its own universe and over the years it has become one of my absolute favorite scenes to dive into. Black Dynasty was made up of brothers Kariem Abdullah and Dion Stewart, two cats who carried that authentic East Oakland energy from the late 80s into the early 90s. Their second album “Deep East Oakland” stands as their defining moment and stands as a true underground Bay releases from that era in my opinion. Heavy drums, street knowledge, funk soaked production and that unmistakable Oakland flavor all over the record. The project opened doors for live shows alongside @mchammer and @tooshort , giving them real momentum locally before tragedy struck. Dion Stewart sadly lost his life during an attempted robbery, cutting short what could have become something much bigger on a worldwide scale. Even without mainstream recognition, Black Dynasty earned deep respect throughout their region and among collectors who truly know Bay Area rap history. Huge respect to @helladoperecords for bringing this masterpiece back to life. Record of the day…! As most of my followers probably already know, I hold @tooshort in incredibly high regard. His entire catalog is essential to my collection and this one absolutely had to find its place on the shelf as well. With “Blow the Whistle” you are not getting the classic Bay Area sound many people associate with Short. This album leans heavily into that southern crunk energy and it is impressive how effortlessly he rides these beats with the same smooth confidence, laid back swagger and untouchable attitude that made him legendary in the first place. The fact that he was still dropping albums at this level on his 16th studio release says everything about his consistency and longevity. Production from @liljon and @jazzepha brings pure mid 2000s club energy with hard hitting drums and infectious hooks built for packed dance floors. Guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Pimp C, Bun B, Rick Ross and will.i.am add even more flavor to the album and perfectly capture the sound and energy of that era. This was the sound dominating the streets and clubs in 2006 and the chemistry between Too Short and the southern production style connected perfectly with the masses. Finally the collection feels a little more complete. Having the honor of working with @blackc and releasing the timeless classic “Ruthless By Law” is something we truly value. You would have to search long and hard to find a more solid and professional collaboration. @rblposse is without question one of the rawest groups to ever come out of the Bay Area and personally one of my all time favorites. That unmistakable Hunters Point energy, the heavy production and the authentic street poetry still hit just as hard today. Black C deserves endless respect for the work he has put in since the late 80s throughout the 90s and still to this day. Not only is he a true craftsman behind the boards and the mic, but also a true talent scout with an incredibly sharp ear for authentic Hip Hop and future greatness. 4 years ago today, @kendricklamar returned with his long awaited fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. Five years had passed since DAMN. and the expectations were sky high. I’ll be honest, Kendrick was never an artist I fully connected with in the beginning. But over time his music kept revealing new layers and this album completely changed my perspective. The production is bold, unpredictable and deeply soulful, while the writing feels painfully honest from start to finish. This is more than just a rap album. It feels like therapy pressed onto wax. Themes of childhood, trauma, growth and self reflection run through the entire project and Kendrick delivers it all with raw emotion and incredible execution. To me, this stands as one of the strongest releases of 2022 and I’m still happy I managed to secure this copy for a reasonable price here in Norway. Record of the day! The year is 98’ and the smoke is still heavy in the air as @cypresshill return with their fourth studio album «IV». This one often lives in the shadow of «Temples Of Boom» but make no mistake, this record is packed with everything that made Cypress one of the most unique groups to ever touch the genre. The formula stays untouchable with @djmuggs_the_black_goat_ handling the production from front to back and once again proving why his sound was years ahead of its time. Dark psychedelic textures, dusty drums and those eerie loops wrap around every track perfectly. @breal sounds razor sharp throughout the whole project while @sendog brings that raw energy that always balances the chemistry perfectly. Tracks like «Tequila Sunrise» and «Audio X» still knock heavy while @eiht0eiht slides through on «Prelude To A Come Up» and adds even more West Coast flavor to the mix. This album may not always get the same praise as some of their earlier classics but the quality is undeniable and the atmosphere on this record is incredible from start to finish. 27 years ago today, the Doggfather reminded the world exactly who he was. After a couple records that never quite touched the magic of “Doggystyle”, @snoopdogg came crashing back with a record drenched in that authentic West Coast flavor we all grew up on. “No Limit Top Dogg” feels like a statement album from start to finish. Smooth, aggressive, funky and unapologetically Cali. This one had been missing from the shelf for way too long, so adding this beautiful repress to the collection felt extra special. This Chicago jewel is one of those albums that somehow slipped through the cracks back in the 90s, only to return decades later sounding fresher than ever. Deep basslines, mellow grooves, soulful textures and razor sharp rhymes from start to finish. No gimmicks, no filler, just pure underground Hip Hop crafted with passion and vision. Originally released in 1996 on D.A.L. Records, this project captures that authentic independent era perfectly. You can hear the hunger in every verse and the craftsmanship in every beat. 32 years around the sun today and this one felt like the perfect soundtrack for it. For me one of the hardest releases to come from @officialsouthcentralcartel . A record I have been hunting for what feels like forever and last year it finally got the vinyl treatment it truly deserves. This is the group’s second studio album and honestly one of the coldest West Coast records ever crafted. The production from @bigprodeje and Havikk The Rhime Son captures that raw mid 90s Los Angeles atmosphere perfectly. Pure G funk pressure from start to finish with heavyweight verses all over the project. The artwork alone is legendary status to me so finally having this piece in the collection feels almost unreal. Huge respect to my partner @northcyde_vinyl for doing it justice with a proper gatefold double LP release. Exactly how a classic like this should be presented. The sound quality is flawless and the overall product feels premium in every possible way. And finally being able to let “Gangsta Team” knock through the speakers on wax is something special.
