MalgrĆ© Moi // Original Score for CBC / Ici TĆ©lĆ© When @wookeyfilms asked us to score our first tv show, we were flattered and excited. We’ve done a lot of composition in the last couple years but to be trusted with a full broadcast show (and a very music-forward television show at that) felt like a special opportunity that we couldn’t pass up. Janelle and Jeremie, along with the director of the series, @max.beauchamp were all such thoughtful and creative collaborators. Often with composition, the notes you get back are that you were a little too adventurous, out-there, etc.. But with Max it was always the opposite: make it even weirder, don’t make something I’ve heard before. It was extremely refreshing and liberating. We’re really excited with how it turned out! Grateful to hear it’s been doing well in the initial streaming run. We’ll share some clips as we’re able, but for now check out MalgrĆ© Moi on @icitoutv .

Begonia - Fantasy Life OUT TODAY! When Alexa came to us wanting to work on a third album, she could have worked with anyone – we would have definitely understood her wanting to switch things up after writing and producing everything together for nearly a decade. But if we had to name one quality that we really respect about Alexa (and there are so many wonderful ones), it’s the loyalty that she shows to her people. If you get to be one of her people, it’s truly a gift. We couldn’t be happier to have been trusted with this record. Getting to help express someone else’s inner-most thoughts and vulnerabilities and make them into music is a task we don’t take lightly, and Alexa bared her soul with this record. It’s easy to say this is the thing we’re most proud of to date, and we hope you really enjoy @hellobegonia ā€˜s Fantasy Life. ā¤ļø you so much Alexa!

One morning before a writing session for the new Begonia album, Matt (Peters) made a simple loop with some warm, muted piano chords and sampled percussion (Alexa has endearingly termed these song-starting-points ā€œshitbitsā€ lol). We set it aside for a few days, but kept finding ourselves drawn to it whenever we would hear it. Music is funny that way - You can try to intellectualize the reasons you like something, but often it’s just a vague but insistent feeling of, ā€œthis one.ā€ During these sessions we had been on this kick where we would sample our own old, discarded ideas or songs. We knew this song needed something distinct and we stumbled upon a track in a demo-session from 8 years ago where Alexa was just trying out random syllables. We threw that in the sampler with warp off and played it a 4th down from where it was originally sung and we instantly all had that same ā€œthis oneā€ moment. We could almost make out some words in the sample, which Alexa then let guide her into what the chorus would become. We later tried recreating the sample with the real words to re-sample it down, but it just didn’t have whatever magic that first one did. So that’s the vocal in the intros and post-chorus. Alexa took this nugget and made it into a beautiful, simple love song. In the studio, it felt right to have her partner Seth hum along with her and ofc it was cute AF. This is one of our favourites from the record dropping Oct 24th. It’s one of the simplest, most straightforward tunes, and I think that’s why it works. But don’t you worry—there’s plenty of chaos on the full record :) Set a reminder or something for the full record which comes out in a couple weeks! It’s one of our favourite things we’ve had the pleasure of being a part of.

On Hotter than the sun we wanted to do the Begonia version of classic videogame music - Zelda, final fantasy, etc. So, epic melodies but played on small chirpy sounding instruments, and the whole thing on a continuous loop. During the writing phase we played around with like 3 different versions of the melodies and lyrics for the hook and nothing felt quite right. Then the day before we were set to record, Alexa showed up at the studio with a totally new perspective on the lyrics that felt like it had been there all along. The bridge also has one of our favourite Begonia stanzas: ā€œBed Never made I get people paid Play video games Then Take you to the hamster living in my Brainā€

ā€œSo Highā€ by @hellobegonia is out now! This was the second song we wrote with Alexa when she came down to our little studio last August. Alexa played us a voice memo from her phone of her singing this lyric, ā€œLet’s get so high that we don’t feel nothing.ā€ There was a feeling in this recording that was immediately gripping and honest - you can hear her fingers snapping in time and footsteps on the street in the background. We put the voice memo in a session on our computer and got to work building a little world for it. The lyrics, piano, bass and drums came together so quickly - the first passes and sketches of ideas often ending up as the final takes. Such a good feeling when it all tumbles out free and easy. So proud of Alexa for her raw and vulnerable lyrics on this. What a feat to bring so much levity and lightness while still being so open and honest. From Alexa, ā€œThis to me is a song that indulges in playfulness but also touches on a balance I’m always searching for. Self care vs. self neglect. Running away from problems vs. chasing after a butterfly.ā€ Thanks to @mungojordandrums for nailing the drums, @keithharrisondyrda for improvising the gorgeous trombone solo and the Prairie Sky String Quartet (@violinelation , @chris.anstey.violin , @elise.lavallee and @cellyssa15 ) for performing our string arrangements with such care. Also, @nightmall_ , @mikemaryniuk + @sethalbertwood totally crushed the video. & @kristianmontano did a wonderful job on the master! More coming sooooooon!!

OUT NOW- ASH IN MY MOUTH ā€œ...Threw my bread to the ducks, and it came back buttered.....ā€ šŸ¦†šŸ¦†šŸžšŸ„–šŸ§ˆ Curious opening line eh? It was based on an idiom my Mum used to say when I was a kid. I had no idea what she meant, but it rattled around somewhere in my frame right up until it fell out of my mouth and onto this track all these years later... Rest of lyrics to follow, so you can psychoanalyse me. let me know the diagnosis/prognosis, (But ya can’t turn a pickle back to a cucumber) This one’s a bit of a hip-jiggler & tongue twister, and marks a return to playful lo-fi roots with a sprinkling of 90’s era kickback.. Cooked up in collab with my pals Deadmen (also of the excellent Royal Canoe). Every time I’ve been about to drop it, something awful happened in the world that made it feel totally out of line with the moment and I’ve pushed it back. But I’ve decided to accept that it’s just Sods law that I’m finally moving out of my dark cinematic era just as the apocalypse kicks in.. So here it is, I stand by the sentiment. And it was fun to make.
