On Monday, May 4, 2026, the DC Fire and EMS Department welcomed 74 new hires to begin their journey toward becoming Firefighter/EMTs.
That is 74 distinct personalities, 74 different backgrounds, and 74 individual stories coming together with one purpose: to learn, grow, and function as a team.
Over the next 36 weeks, they will be challenged physically, mentally, and professionally as they train to serve the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia. Among this group are 9 paramedics who bring additional clinical experience to the class.
This is where the transformation begins.

✅ Cadet Program Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must: • Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application • Be a DC resident, 18–21 years old as of April 30, 2026 • Possess a valid DC driver’s license, provisional license, or learner’s permit by April 30, 2026 • (Must have a valid driver’s license by completion of training) • Have graduated from a DC public, charter, or private high school with a diploma or possess a GED issued by the DC Department of Education • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
🎓 GPA Waiver:
High school GPA requirements are waived for applicants currently enrolled in an accredited college or university who have completed 6 or more credit hours with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
❗ If you do not meet the Cadet Program requirements, you may still qualify for Firefighter EMT or Firefighter Paramedic positions. • We anticipate the Firefighter EMT opening in spring/early summer (date TBD). • Currently a nationally registered paramedic? Please reach out.
