I had to go back to this time to emphasize a point: the importance of tenacity. Not only the importance of it, but the realism surrounding it. These photos of Seattle native and Orlando Magic star @paolo5 highlight true tenacity. The insatiable desire to go for it no matter what’s in your way. You can’t score what you don’t shoot for. Sometimes you have to act like you’re the only player on the court and block out all noise. Outside pressure. Mounting expectations. It’s all noise. Part of tenacity is knowing why you do something. In fact, the 'why' is what tenacity is built around. Why do you do it? Why is going for the goal? Why do you think you can push through these obstacles and still score? And if you don’t know your 'why', I just hope you’re tenacious enough to find it.✨

In the midst of my hiatus, I became a wanderer. Trying to find balance. Trying to see the color in the world again. The world just stayed black and white. No color in sight. I thought the world was dead. I thought I didn’t have it in me anymore when it was really just a different perspective. The lack of color allowed me to see everything for what it was without distraction. When everything seems black and white, don’t run. Embrace the new perspective. Now you can see everything for what it really is.

At one point I cared too much about image. I know, that’s sounds crazy as hell coming from a photographer, but bear with me. At one point I focused too much on the looks of images while negating the most important piece in any medium: the story. What is the reason for the image’s existence? What elements of this piece of work can inspire the next generation? These were the type of questions that escaped me as I was spending too much time making sure that the vibrance and saturation didn’t have my subjects looking like Nintendo characters. Black and white spoke to the storyteller in me and challenged to capture more than the person. This collection of old black and white photos I’ve taken over the years represents what I truly love about this art form. The image is what catches our eye, but the meaning is what captures our spirit.

I thought about the importance of talent the other day. What is it really meant for? Gratification? Ego boost? What’s the true measure of talent not being wasted? Then I thought about why our talents are called gifts. The gifts from God are meant to be gifted to others and when you mix that with the positive influence you have, you have the recipe for driving your community forward. Tacoma is a tough city with culture and character, but it’s not without its many struggles. It’s a community that’s needs a spark. A community that needs motivation. And who better than the hometown kid @isaiahthomas . The basketball legend hosted his annual @zekeend and the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. From the dominant displays put on by the players to the excited look of the fans from different generations when they met legends new and old, this event exemplifies what bringing together a community should look like. Thank you to Isaiah Thomas and @slowgrind for a fantastic event!
