New fun & silly one for Mac DeMarco last night at @theryman ! I love using all of the type and images at Hatch to make something that looks less like a classic poster & more like some found object. In this case, it’s a yellow carbon copy receipt that someone filled out for their poster order. I took care to print all of the black “pre-printed” information clean and clear, and then proceeded to intentionally skew all of the blue “handwritten” text to try and make it feel like someone jotted everything down quickly. Is making a poster that’s an order form for their poster too meta? Let me know! Thanks for lookin :-) #letterpress #woodtype #metaltype #posterdesign #macdemarco

Very excited to share this set of 3 posters @violetofeelya and I designed for @yelyahwilliams @hwhq sold out @theryman residency over the past few nights! . The creative input we got from Hayley’s team was “old Nashville”. We got to work on three designs that incorporate a different photo of Hayley for each night, inspired by Hatch’s long history of printing posters for the stars of the Grand Ole Opry. It’s a timeless look when it’s executed right, and thankfully we have all the tools necessary to make it come to life. . Even though each poster is only 2 colors, we had to run them in three passes to ensure the type and photo plates looked their absolute best. Separating those elements ensure the type looks bold while the photos keep all their detail without filling in. . Violet and I first collaborated on a poster for the Paramore This Is Why album release show back in 2023. Getting to come together on these three posters was really special, and felt truly collaborative in nature. Printing is always a bit more fun with a friend, especially when you’re running a 126 year old press and the going gets a bit rough. Grateful for the opportunity on this one especially. #letterpress #printmaking #posterdesign #gigposter #hayleywilliams

Acadia National Park & Mount Desert Island in early October on 35mm. 🌲 It’s been a long while since I shot 35, getting more frames to experiment with is always nice especially with my fuzzy cheap lens. Be on the lookout for some long exposure experiments tucked away in these shots. 🌲 📸: Canon AE-1 Program 🎞️: Kodak ProVision & Gold 🧪: @boutiquefilmlab #shootfilm #35mmfilm #canonae1program #shootfilmnotmegapixels

Classic show poster vibes all over this poster I got to make for @stereolabgroop tonight at @ballroommarfa ! 🎹 I designed this in an attempt to capture the look and feel of a show poster from days past, when posters were tacked to telephone poles and wheat-pasted to walls. I started with making the band name as large and eye catching as possible, and then worked around it to include the rest of the information. To add to the old poster look, I added some extra text to try and entice a potential onlooker to check out the show. The colors are all tweaks of the classic red-yellow-black poster, to bring something new to the mix while being rooted in the history of Hatch. Since Stereolab have a knack for taking old music elements and putting a fresh and interesting spin on them, this felt like a great way to represent their work as a band as well. 🎹 This was one of those jobs I never would’ve anticipated coming through the shop, and as a result I was very excited to get to make this. Swipe through for shots of each layer on the press! #letterpress #printmaking #woodtype #metaltype #posterdesign #gigposter

Made an oversized bag of fast food for the @mjlenderman headlining debut at @theryman last night! 🍟 I’ve had this concept rattling around in my brain for a while, and when this show got announced it felt like the perfect opportunity to execute it. Since MJ hails from North Carolina I felt that a bag from Cook Out was the best fit for the design inspiration, especially because Hatch has a lot of very similar type in the archive. 🍔 I worked backwards, printing all of the text and tint blocks first. I finished the run with a transparent collagraph block made up of layered kraft paper under a sheet of Contact paper. When printed, the layers of kraft paper make the folds of a mass produced paper bag, and the Contact paper protects it all while adding some wrinkles and creases along the edges. The design really shines up close, where the subtle shifts in color are most apparent. 🥤 I’ve been following MJ for the better part of the last 4 years - Boat Songs was a major part of the soundtrack to my first year living in Nashville - so this was a real treat to make. I often think I’m at my best when I’m making things that aren’t too serious & this is a prime example of that. As always, swipe for process shots and thanks for looking & reading! #printmaking #letterpress #posterdesign #woodtype #metaltype

New prints for sale! Happy October! I’ve been spending the last few weeks working on these reduction prints of a vintage plastic devil mask, and thought there was no better way to ring in the month than by putting them out into the world. 😈 These are four color reduction prints, printed on 100# cardstock and protected in bags with hand printed tags. To ensure maximum Halloween fun each print will come with a mystery goodie bag with some small treats and things, bundled up in a vintage paper bag. It’s $35 if you need one and you’re local to Nashville, I’m happy to ship but will need to add on that cost. Send me a message to grab one. They’re limited to 20 prints and won’t be printed again, so act fast to get one in time for Halloween! 🎃 If you’re new around here, or somehow forgot, I’m a huge fan of the Halloween season. As someone who spends most of this month around the warm glow of old blow molds with a horror movie on, I thought it would be fun to try my hand at the vintage Halloween style I love so much & I hope it strikes a chord with you too. Thanks for looking and reading! #linocut #reductionprint #printmaking #halloween

With @sesamestreet coming to visit Hatch, it felt like a good time to share this poster I made for their live show at @dpacnc back in April! . With a cast as iconic as Sesame Street, I thought the best way to reference the show would be by recreating the street sign logo with type and rules from the collection. One of the things I love most about letterpress is using what you have on hand to make something that fits a specific vision, and this was a perfect exercise of that style of designing. . Having Elmo, Abby and Slimey in the shop was incredible, I think it was the most excited for a guest most of us could have been. Swipe for a pic of me with Slimey, experiencing PURE bliss!! #letterpress #printmaking #woodtype #posterdesign

New one for Elvis Costello last night at @theryman ! Sometimes I go into a poster with a really specific idea in mind, and sometimes I find a weird block in the wall that I’ve never seen before and make it a goal to get it on the poster. Enter these two heads, and my idea to make the poster read like a comic conversation between the two of them. Throw in some diy fluorescent ink for maximum eye catching silliness. #letterpress #printmaking #woodtype #posterdesign #gigposter

Chelsea and I watch Jaws every year on the 4th and I always think to myself that I should make a print based on the movie, so this year I actually did it! Does it count as a master copy if I’m referencing a chalkboard in a movie? Or is this a bootleg? These are for sale if anyone needs a dumbass print for their home. To go with the linocut I made a small print featuring the end of Quint’s monologue in the town hall scene - $20 gets you both, $25 if I gotta ship them. Fuck the 4th of July, celebrate Jaws instead and make some stupid art. 🦈 #linocut #printmaking #jaws

Some scenes on film from Redwood National and State Parks from our trip last month 🌲 Being around these huge old trees was really humbling and inspiring - it felt like every turn on every train had us wide eyed at how massive the trees were. Capturing the size of these in a photo is really difficult, until you get a person for scale it’s really hard to gauge just how tall redwoods are. Look for Chelsea for scale in some of the shots! 📷: Mamiya RB67 / Polaroid SLR680 🎞️: Lomography Color Negative 100 + Kodak E100 / Polaroid 600 Color 120 film developed & scanned by @boutiquefilmlab #filmphotography #mediumformatfilm #instantfilm #shootmorefilm

Poster printing process for Gillian Welch and David Rawlings at Carnegie Hall! Due to the nature of the split fountains I had to run, the first two layers were run on the Miehle Pony, with the final layer coming off the Universal 3. A small tour of presses in action for your weekend. #letterpress #printmaking #woodtype #splitfountain #posterprinting #posterdesign

New pair of posters to commemorate @gillianwelchofficial and @davidrawlingsmusic playing two nights at @carnegiehall ! Since playing Carnegie is no small feat, I looked to the building for visual inspiration and quickly found it in the stained glass on the outdoor poster display boxes. I matched that type to the best of my ability using the hatch archive, carved the stained glass “solder” and built a frame on the poster. Once I had that, I made a second smaller “poster” to sit in the frame, with a different split fountain background for each night. The buildings flanking the sides of the poster are pulled from an old Hatch block, bringing a bit of Nashville history to Carnegie. I made a video of the process that’ll be posted soon, stay tuned for behind the scenes fun! #letterpress #printmaking #woodtype #reliefprinting #splitfountain #gigposter #posterdesign
