This one means a lot 🥹 With running I try to be process, not outcome, driven. If you enjoy the pursuit and pursue it appropriately, the outcomes usually take care of themselves. But the outcome 10 weeks ago at the GC marathon rattled the cage, physically and emotionally. I’d expected to showcase the training I’d put in, but instead I found myself crawling on all fours, vomiting and bleeding at 18km. A strange and humbling feeling. I’m unbelievably lucky to have such inspiring and supportive people in my corner who encouraged me to go again. I wished for anything but the Goldie heat and humidity… and got exactly that wish: 6 degrees, 30km winds 🌬️❄️ It was a tough day out there for sure, and I’ll save the full war story for when we catch up but I was just delighted to finally put in the type of work I knew I had in me. Huge shoutout to @matty_b_runnz who nailed two marathons in two weeks 🤯, to everyone who got out there, and to the organisers. The support and well wishes I’ve received has been unreal, you’ve all played a part. A special thanks to @terri.cmorris who has been next level 👸🏼 Of course, there’s so much more to life than running, and so much more to running than chasing an arbitrary time goal. But today we’ll indulge, because it was never about the time, it was about throwing a lasso around a goal in the future and dragging it into the present. Introducing LSKD Ponsonby Store Athlete @david.2me 🔥 1. What’s your story? Tell us where you’re from and what you’re passionate about. I grew up in Limerick,  Ireland and moved to Aotearoa in 2013. I’m a physiotherapist by background, but I’ve always been driven by curiosity, how the body works, how pain behaves, and how movement can change people’s lives. I played a lot of rugby growing up and picked up more than my fair share of injuries along the way. These days I still love getting in the gym, but I’ve swapped the collisions for running shoes and hiking boots. I now lecture and research at AUT, and I get a real buzz out of helping people connect the dots between theory and practice. Running is a big part of my life now, not just as a sport, but as a way to explore, connect with others, and test my limits. 2. What’s your favourite way to move, and why? My favourite way to move is with friends. Whether it’s a long run, a gym session, or a hike, sharing movement with others makes it more meaningful. Running is probably the anchor. There’s something honest and freeing about your body having to sing off the same hymn sheet. It’s both a physical and mental reset. I love the simplicity, just shoes on and out the door, and I love the challenge. Long runs and track sessions with the MISC crew are what I enjoy the most. Resistance training gives me structure and rhythm, and hiking gives me headspace. Each one offers something different, but they all keep me grounded. 3. What does being 1% better every day mean to you? For me, being 1% better means banking a small, meaningful win each day. It’s not about smashing every session or chasing perfection. It’s about doing the best you can with what you have. That might mean pushing hard in a workout, but it could just as easily be prioritising recovery, prepping lunch the night before, having a good chat with a mate, or making time to properly switch off. It also means exercising self-compassion, knowing that showing up, staying curious, and being consistent counts, even when things don’t go to plan. That’s my version of progress. [Mo]re Than a Run, marginally less than a swim! 😅☔️ The things we do during @movember are not necessarily meant to be easy. It might be reaching out, it might be checking in, it might be digging deep or it might be subjecting your colleagues to watching a slug grow on your face for a month! On the 30/11/24 we took part in @more_than_a_run with the perfect conditions to get to work to raise some awareness and funds for @movember @mo_aotearoa 60km ✅ for the 60 men we lose every around the world to suicide. If you would like to donate, there is still time and the link is in my bio. If you are struggling please reach out. 🙏 The work that people, I am lucky to run with, have collectively done this month for a special cause is absolutely insane. I was lucky and grateful to be able to ride on the coat-tails of a lot of other peoples’ hard graft on Saturday. The “pre”, the “intra” and the “post” was all incredible and didn’t go unnoticed. Thanks to all. It’s a week after the @miscproduct 5km time trial and we are all still buzzing from it! I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has shown up for us, and most importantly themselves over the few months. It has meant more than you know, whether you’ve been fast or last. I was sent a podcast from a mate back home @eoincrem where a running coach and writer was asked about tips for athletes and it resonated with me so I said I’d share it here in case it does with you. Peter Bromka wrote… “If they’re willing to listen and open to learn, I also suggest finding friends who love this game as much as you do, whose passion often outpaces your own. Build a running life with them, stacking miles through mud, sleet, and rain together. Because, years from now, no one can know who among you will still be healthy, who will be given the chance to shine, or if any of you will succeed on the stage.
