Yesterday hit different.
My first full group of JY Cinema/Houston City College seniors from Jack Yates High School—three years together, every step of the way.
And this group? Includes the top 6 in the JY Class of 2026.
Proud doesn’t even touch it. ❤️💛💙💛 #JY #hcc
Zoe is our rescue dog who found us in Kuwait in 2012 and followed us back to the U.S. 🇺🇸🐶
Zoe is quiet, mostly obedient, and is nosey. While visiting friends at Lake Conroe, she suddenly refused to leave the pier and come inside, but kept acting anxious. When they went to coax her in, they noticed splashing—an elderly man was drowning.
Three people jumped in and saved him.
Turns out… Zoe alerted them.
Good girl, Zoe. She saved a life. ❤️🌊👏
After a season of big accomplishments with my students, we spent Friday night with my middle son Christian and his wife Rachel watching Project Hail Mary—a story Mignon and Rachel both said we needed to see.
This morning, it’s still hitting me in a good way. A reminder that real heroes quietly show up for the people they love.
Feeling grateful. ❤️

Been a while since I’ve been back to SXSW — and what a year to return! 🎬 Two films from JY Cinema at Jack Yates High School were selected for the Texas High School Film Showcase — the only two films from the Houston area. And during the Q&A, Maja absolutely knocked it out of the park. Proud Papa moment. 🤩❤️💛
At Mom’s today digging through one of her photo boxes and found this gem of my Great Uncle Earl Allstott — WWII veteran and apparently a 1950s OG gangster before it was cool. 💪❤️
You know the school year is on its last leg when it’s time for the Senior Panoramic Photo! 📸 This year was extra special because I got to sit between Coach Hunter and Coach Hunter — brother and sister and both proud Yates alumni. Moments like this remind you that Yates isn’t just a school… it’s FAMILY! ❤️💛🦁
Huge proud-teacher moment 🎥🦁❤️💛 This past Wednesday, 17 of my advanced JY Cinema scholars were honored at the UIL Film Festival for their short documentary “New Heights – with JD Wallace,” selected as one of the top films in a statewide competition of over 840 entries. And the celebration continues — in two weeks, this film as well as “Hot Off the Press – with Ken Burns” will be showcased at the prestigious SXSW EDU Festival in Austin. Our superstars are proudly representing 3rd Ward twice at state this semester!
Have plans tonight? Change them. No plans? You do now.
Don’t miss the FINAL performance of the Jack Yates Theatre 🎭 Ensemble’s Little Shop of Horrors — an unforgettable night of powerhouse performances, incredible vocals, and a set design that will absolutely blow you away. This is the perfect Saturday date night or night out with friends.
📍 Jack Yates High School — 3650 Alabama St, Houston
🕖 Tonight at 7:00 PM
Come support these amazing scholars and experience the magic live! 🎭✨❤️💛
An extra special Friday ❤️💛 OneGoal Preview Day at TSU — a beautiful day to stroll next door from JY as our scholars experienced real campus life and imagined their next chapter. My iWatch kept warning me it was too loud… which meant I was exactly where I needed to be! And the bonus moment? Running into three of my forever students now blazing their own trails at TSU. Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. — Doc DeJohn 🦁🎥 #JYCinema #OneGoal #TSU #ProudTeacher #FutureLeaders LionPride
