"I just kept building confidence. I would go out and race and then surprise myself. It felt like anything was kind of possible for a period."
Abby details her love for running and the community she built in NYC. She's had a fast progression in her marathon journey to hit her OTQ.
Her perspective on running is a great way to view running. She does it because of her enjoyment and even runs home from her night out.
She talks about her Mom running an OTQ and PRing at the age of 49 and how inspirational that is.

Abby Shoemaker still isn’t quite sure how she made the jump to Olympic Trials Qualifier.
Up until a year ago, she didn’t even think it was a realistic goal for her. She’d run several marathons in the 2:50-3:00 range, but still felt far away from an OTQ. Then one day while training for the 2025 Boston Marathon, Abby remembers waking up, running ‘the best workout of [her] life,’ and all of a sudden believing that once unattainable target was within reach.
The Brooklyn resident ran 2:44 in Boston, then a 2:37 as part of the pro field in New York, and last month won the Napa Valley Marathon in a course-record 2:35 to punch her ticket to the 2028 Olympic Trials. She calls her progress over the last year an example of all her training coming together at once, without even ‘being able to predict it.’
Abby’s qualifier comes seven years after her mom, Perry, qualified for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials with a 2:43 at age 48. She credits her mom with being a huge inspiration in her running journey over the years, and the person who actually had to convince her to stay involved in the sport competitively after high school—a decision she can safely say was the right one.
We spoke with Abby to discuss the reasons she kept running in college for @uchicagotf and afterward for @dashingwhippets , how the sport has helped her do hard things in other areas of her life, her experience running in the professional field at last year’s New York City Marathon and more.

All you need is shoes 👟 @newbalancerunning and @vo2matt_ pulled up to our track workout last week with new shoes to try out 🙌
We warmed up in the brand new Ellipse v1, then laced up the FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5 for a fast interval session.
The perfect combo for a night at the track, and drinks after 🔥🍻
With warmer days ahead, we look back on recent races near and far, and other events from this past winter road racing season.
1 - Jeremy Arthur broke the tape at the Chicago Lakefront Ultra 50K in 2:54:06 last weekend. The highlight? Jeremy ran into the arms of his son at the finish line, along with the rest of his family who travelled to support him.
2 - Paulina Aceves broke the tape at the @nycruns Spring Fling 5K on Governor’s Island last weekend
3-5 - Back in February, Whippets took on @prospectparktc Cherry Tree 10 Miler, racing through the snow and cold conditions 📸 @oliviawitherite
6, 7 - While NYC was under snow and ice this winter, some members travelled to Asia to travel in warmer conditions. Alan Wu took on the Taipei Marathon and Hector Claudio ran the Ho Chi Minh International Marathon at the start of the winter season.
Spring racing is here! Whippets are excited to get back to road racing!
This weekend, Stephen Cox and pup Coco took a Fast and Furry-ous 5K at the @cornell.rchc Bark in the Park 5K, taking the top spot 🏆🐕
Post race, Stephen reported, “Coco was thrilled to set a 5K PR and hopes to come back next year with a more capable human, or a longer leash. Thanks to the Cornell Riney Canine Health Center for the high energy event. The volunteers did a great job!”
In March, Olivia Jaenicke took 1st place Woman in the Forest Ave Mile on Staten Island, and Tim Haas took 1st Place, Clydesdale Division.
Also in recent local races, Izzy Frelinghuysen set a PR at the NYC Half, and Abdel Khalil broke the tape at the NYS Parks Winter Run Series!

OSR30 2026. Choose your own adventure.
Dashing Whippets Highlights:
Frank Lin - 8th Place Overall - “Crossing the finish line felt very rewarding, and especially fulfilling after I overcame an injury-plagued winter. I was proud of myself for just completing my first ultramarathon, never mind top 10! It also gave me further proof that I can do hard things, which only motivates me even more to accomplish even greater things in my future!”
Eileen Laverty - 10th Place Woman - “OSR 30 was the epitome of everything I love about NYC and the running community. Racing the perimeter of Manhattan with an amazing support crew was one of my fav running memories.”
Jeffrey Henstenburg - “It’s the most epic race I’ve ever done, and may ever do. I was battling the streets with those around me, rather than racing against them. So much energy from a small group of people willing to accomplish something big. Can’t wait to do it again next year!”
Angela Petrone - “It’s a great race if you want to feel less intimidated by the marathon and want to learn how to be a bit self sufficient. I would love to see more women and femmes do it in the future.”
