Dasha Ilina — Keynote and Q&A (EN)
Dasha Ilina @dashesandcommas is a Russian technocritical artist based in Paris. She employs low-tech and DIY approaches to question, document, and challenge the mythology surrounding technology, ultimately revealing what it tells us about the world. Her practice engages the public in order to facilitate a space for the development of critical thought regarding social imperatives for care, privacy in the digital age, and the reflexive contemporary urge to turn to technology for answers.

Beyond excited to share Energy Academy - a new project by @dashesandcommas and @marie_verdeil produced at @antre.peaux with the precious help of @_kmrff_ who did the video and audio recording❤️
Watch the full video here: /energy-academy/energy-academy-FR-sub.mp4
Some of you might remember our Battery Academy workshops, well now it’s time for Energy Academy - a video installation tackling the myths surrounding (renewable) energy today.
Drawing on the visual and narrative codes of popular science programs such as Bill Nye the Science Guy or C’est pas sorcier, the video questions the concept of the ecological transition. Taking inspiration from research on degrowth, low-tech, and permacomputing practices, Energy Academy examines the widespread myth of free energy via perpetual motion machines, while addressing the issue of shortage and misuse of renewable energies and, more broadly, technosolutionism in the energy sector. Using humour, wacky sound effects, and colourful props, Energy Academy attempts to make the complex and often intentionally obfuscated subject of energy tangible.
Co-produced by @imal_brussels and @antre.peaux with the support of @if_officiel in the framework of the @extrafrbe Residencies and @wal.bru.international .
Our @extrafrbe residency with @marie_verdeil has sadly come to an end 🥲 But we had an amazing and very productive time at @imal_brussels and @antre.peaux 💖
Here are some photos of our end of residency presentation at Antre Peaux last week, during which we presented the research and some of the workshop outcomes that happened during our first month of residency in Brussels, as well as the video and the props we produced in Bourges (which we will be sharing with you all soon!)
We learned a lot, worked a lot and ate lots of curries! Stay tuned for the future of the project :-)
And special thanks to @violeneverduron for supporting us along the way, alongside the teams of iMAL and Antre Peaux!
Dasha’s Kitchen: My Magical Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe (2024) is exhibited at @panke.gallery and there is still a bit more than a week to go see it and the rest of the amazing expo on esoteric algorithms and re-enchanted technologies 😍🧚♀️
A big thank you to @arianna.forte2 and @noemi_lia2000 for inviting me to be part of this super nice show!

And... 🚗🔌🔋🚙...
what if we cooked with batteries
Batteries have become an ubiquitous method of storing energy. From TV remotes to smartphones to now even electric cars, batteries of different types and sizes and chemical compositions power many of the devices we interact with. In the last few years, they have also become an essential part of the transition towards a sustainable future. But really, is a battery-powered society really sustainable?
In this workshop, we will discuss alternatives to current energy models, while trying to make energy more tangible through playful exercises and DIY prototypes that will remind us what a Watt is. We will collectively explore the history of batteries, discuss their challenges and shortcomings, make our own batteries, and who knows, we might even cook with them! 🍿
This workshop is led by our super residents @dashesandcommas and @marie_verdeil ❤️ ❤️
🦸🔋🌍 Whispers say even Monsieur Batteries, always charged and charming, stopped by to share his spark of wisdom. Will you do so too?
Come on and register fast in the link of our bio if you want to have your seat. It's going to go fast cause seats are limited!

As part of the digital art component of the @extrafrbe , iMAL is hosting Dasha Ilina and Marie Verdeil for a month in a cross-residency with @antre.peaux (Bourges, France).
EXTRA, the programme to support and promote French contemporary creation in Belgium, was launched in 2016 by @francebelgiqueculture , with the support of the @if_officiel in Paris.
We are super 😀 to welcome our new residents!!!!!
As part of the @extrafrbe residencies, iMAL is hosting @dashesandcommas and @marie_verdeil for a month in a cross-residency with @antre.peaux (Bourges, France).
During their residency, Dasha and Marie want to make the concept of energy and the contemporary issues surrounding its storage more tangible.
Through an interactive installation that runs counter to Tesla's Gigafactories - giant battery factories for its electric vehicles - the artists are proposing a radical opposition not only to the massively extractivist production of lithium batteries by Big Techs, but more broadly to the use of finite resources.
Through a participatory process of collecting and experimenting with used batteries, they aim to engage the public in a discussion about energy autonomy, degrowth, the commons and the importance of public transport, at a time of global environmental crises.

And please note:
Their residency at iMAL will conclude with a presentation and a workshop during The Cookery 2025 (18-21 September).
In November, they will join our friends at Antre Peaux for the second part of their residency.
And a presentation of the work will also be planned later on with our colleagues at @cwb_paris <3
