šļøMark your calendars for my May solo show!šļø
Opening reception: Weds, May 31, 7-9
Second Sight: A Visual Opera functions as a single artwork, an abstract narrative that unfolds as the viewer-participant moves through the space. In the darkness, in the unknown, we are in a world between dimensions. Inner worlds surface and secret lives are revealed. The large installation is an immersive experience, incorporating unexpected materials, and offering opportunities for discovery. Bring your flashlights!
"Second Sight: A Visual Opera" solo exhibition by Darcie Book
Julia C. Butridge Gallery at Dougherty Arts Center
Exhibition Dates: May 27, 2023 ā July 22, 2023
Opening Reception: Wednesday, May 31, 7PM - 9PM
Artist Talk: Wednesday, June 28, 7PM - 9PM
āLooking Back, Donāt Look Backā- I really love this painting. To create this piece, I reused materials I saved from a large installation at @school33artcenter titled Midnight Oil. Sometimes it pays to be a packrat!

Learn more about my largest (of many) works on view at The Femme Abstract through Feb 28:
Giving the Game Away is inspired by our collective vulnerability at this moment in history. There is a silver lining to these simultaneous crises we're experiencing in the United States: people are more readily opening up to share their interior lives and emotions. Through our common vulnerability we find an increased sense of empathy -- an important ingredient in lasting change.
Ā
The installation references our inner thoughts-dreams-fears-desires spilling to the surface through the use of ethereal and material mediums, reflected light and acrylic paint respectively. The fluorescent pink color fields reflected into metal leaf and the thick paint pools spilling onto the floor each represent different components of our inner worlds surfacing. Of secret lives being revealed.
I've envisioned that this precise moment of our secret lives being revealed is like a door cracking open and flooding light into a very dark room. This vision and the reality of the Giving the Game Away installation were instantly fused with these words from Amanda Gorman's Inaugural poem as I heard them spoken: "There is always light, if only we are brave enough to see it - If only we are brave enough to be it."

I don't know how I got so lucky to be surrounded by such brilliant, warm, and talented people. ā¤ļø Huge thank you to everyone who came together to kick off the āBorderless: Together Outsideā series: the panelists, Dimension Gallery Sculpture Park, and all our visitors! Not only did y'all create an insightful conversation, but the event had such a warm and inviting energy.
I'm so grateful to each of you and I've gone into this week totally inspired after Sundayās talk. One of the many notes I took during the conversation is this quote from Kill Joy: "Place became not just a space we exist in but a character in our lives". All my motivations for creating the series deal with interconnectedness, so considering place as a character in our lives relates perfectly. I think often about our existence as part of the land, our interconnectedness with all life. And also how the land is alive, and when we look into a landscape, the land looks back at us. š²šļø
Check out my work "The Land Stares Back" at Dimension Gallery Sculpture Park, on view 24/7 until further notice.
Follow each of these amazing people to keep up with their important work!

The event is completely free and open to the public! Though donations are accepted to continue future Borderless: Together Outside programming. To RSVP or send a donation, visit our Eventbrite at /BorderlessPanel (linked in bio)
The Borderless: Together Outside series kicks off with a panel discussion led by Paloma Mayorga and artwork by Darcie Book. Mayorga will moderate a conversation about human relationships to nature and landscape with panelists Jamal Hussain, Kill Joy, and Mueni Loko Rudd, taking place on Sunday March 24th, 6:00 ā 8:00 PM at Dimension Gallery Sculpture Park (950 Springdale Rd, ATX 78702). The conversation coincides with The Land Stares Back, an interactive art intervention by Darcie Book. Please bring your picnic blankets and pillows for lawn seating. Limited chair seating will be available for those who need it.
The Borderless: Together Outside series addresses topics at the intersection of art and environmentalism, led by Austin's LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and refugee communities. Some of our most vulnerable populations feel unsafe and unwelcome in our shared outdoor spaces, and are therefore less likely to experience the joy and major health benefits of time spent in nature. Our goal is to make change in this area through the ongoing community series, and other collaborative efforts. The project's background is aligned with the artistic practice of founder, Darcie Book, as it considers our complex human relationship with the land. The idea is that we look into a landscape and the land looks right back at us. The land is aware. It is alive, and it sees us.
Thanks to Wayne Alan Brenner @austinchronicle for recommending our event in this week's calendar. šā„ļø
