So yeah, we set fire to a buggy. Flicked a miniature buggy off screen. Flew a drone light over a forest for night golf. So nice when you can blend loads of different approaches to achieve all the different ways we wanted to destroy a buggy. On buggy rigs, practical fire gags, CG and even using miniatures. Some of my favourite snippets from the Kia Australian Open campaign, shot on 35mm. The main challenge, it all had to all be POV. So did the twin thing, using arm each side of the camera to avoid having to use a headrig throughout. This meant @joecookdop could operate camera and the actors just act using their arms. It also meant we could use a big ol' 35mm camera. Win win.

Chinese-Vietnamese-British artist Jianbo returned with a groundbreaking music video for his latest track “For The Honour”, featuring Nix Northwest. The fully CGI visual, directed and animated by Dan French and produced by Stink, transports viewers into a surreal underground cyber world, exploring themes of identity, ancestry and honour. Developed as a passion project between French and Jianbo, the video was crafted entirely in French’s spare time-built frame by frame without the aid of motion capture technology. Using iPhone footage of Jianbo dancing as reference, French manually animated each sequence, embracing a stylised aesthetic inspired by early-2000s video games like GTA. The video blends cyberpunk visuals with cultural references drawn from Jianbo’s life, nodding to the cinematic style of Wong Kar Wai and the neon grit of Tokyo’s urban landscape. The result is a gamified narrative that tackles loyalty, sacrifice and the weight of legacy through a hyper-stylised digital lens. I can’t quite believe this ones finally out. Call me crazy but I decided to take on a bit of a madness and do a whole CGI music video. Did all the animation, mocap, modelling of robots, music studios and so on. It was kinda a crazy idea and I was learning a lot as I went but I loved the freedom of just thinking about an idea and making it. So here’s a little GTA inspired Jianbo vid.
