I always like coming back to We Are Experienced. It reminds me of growth, of triumphs, of the years I spent traveling across America with my assistants, meeting incredible kids and documenting how they express themselves through fashion and identity. I worked on this book for ten years. I was self-taught, and this is where I taught myself. It was hard. I was critical, but I learned. It still inspires me every time I look at it.

CITY OF ANGELS Community first ❤️ Nothing, nothing, nothing better than making work with people you love. @newyorkwilly and @jesscuevas7 brought me in for the Adidas campaign - Willy’s collaboration with the @comptoncowboys . The brief pushed us visually in a way I loved. I’ve worked with the Compton Cowboys before, so coming back felt natural. When you’re part of each other’s worlds like that, when the trust is already there, you can really go further. I loved every single minute of making these images and telling this story. @willychavarria @adidasoriginals @comptoncowboys

The best shoots don’t go to plan. For my latest work with @vmagazine and @annatrevelyan , I saddled up for a 12-location hair story, two talent per location, shot in front of real LA salons. No staging, no permits. Just the city as it is. This is everything that went right, everything that didn’t, and what it looks like when a team figures it out in real time. I have spent years documenting youth culture, moving through cities to understand how a place shapes the people who grow up in it. My recent project for At Large took me to Orlando, a city dedicated to Disney and ice cream - I was curious about its kids. My producer @laurabrunisholz  discovered the local record store @foundationcollegepark  , where she met Dom, who introduced us to his friends. We found Lily and Liam at a monster truck rally. The SMOP girls came through Jacques. It takes me back to We Are Experienced, my first monograph, published in 2009 after years of traveling America documenting youth culture. Pre-iPhone, the first generation of kids on the internet, but just barely. There is one photograph in the entire book with kids holding phones, and they are flip phones. Then the iPhone arrived and nothing was the same. Street casting asks a lot of us and of them. Approaching strangers, earning their trust, making them believe you are who you say you are. Our cast gave us everything we wanted and more. Thank you @atlargemagazine  for the trust and the freedom.
