Daniel Firman’s oeuvre is a remarkable exploration of the human form, presented through a lens at once surreal and profoundly intimate. His sculptures, often monumental yet imbued with a delicate sense of vulnerability, challenge our perceptions of space, gravity, and corporeality. Each work captures a fleeting moment of tension or transformation, suspended in time, inviting viewers into an uncanny dialogue between motion and stillness, presence and absence. Firman’s meticulous attention to materiality and form, whether through bronze, plaster, or resin, reveals a masterful command of sculptural language, positioning him as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary art. Collectors and connoisseurs are drawn to the subtle power of his work: a nuanced interplay of human fragility, resilience, and the poetic absurdity of our physical existence.

The sculpture is one of those things that is always in motion.
You move toward it, it expands.
You circle around it, it begins to rotate.
You lean in, it leans with you.
« TASKS » is a research based on improvisation, activating an operative field where movement, displacement and stillness meet. The aim is to allow a sculptural form to emerge through choreography, following a simple protocol.
This work extends my research on « Kinéspheres » (spheres of movement), a series in which danced gesture produces a material trace. Here, that trace disappears: what remains is a constrained space, activated by the body, where sculpture becomes immaterial.
The video brings together short excerpts from two days of filming and experimentation. It reveals a subtle interplay between representation and emotional state.

Daniel Firman’s works
Deeply fuelled by artistic practices such as performance, dance and installation, his sculptures have the particularity of being condensed processes rather than motionless representations. Indeed, the artist relies on traditional sculptural techniques (modelling, moulding and accumulation) but always for purposes of reversal and of upsetting reality. Whether it be represented or not, the body is omnipresent in the process of creation and is first and foremost a tool for analysis.

The Church’s (@thechurchsagharbor ) summer exhibition ‘The Ark’, curated by Eric Fischl (@fischlstudio ), gathers over 40 animal sculptures. Inspired by the myth of the Great Flood, the show reflects on humanity’s bond with animals, nature, and the self—where beauty, empathy, vulnerability, and tenderness emerge in handmade works that mirror both the wild and the interior world.
From Daniel Firman’s (@daniel_firman_studio ) awe-striking elephant to Charles Ray’s luminous Silver dog and the embrace of Bourgeois’s Double Spider—on view for the first time at an East End arts institution—the exhibition transforms The Church into a shared domain between viewer and creature. The Ark invites visitors to gather, wonder, and reconnect. On view through Labor Day weekend in Sag Harbor.
