Split | Second !!! It was an honor to design this exhibit for the @mitmuseum which opened in February and is on view until next January!
Split | Second tells the story of timekeeping in ever-smaller increments from solar time to mechanical time, electric time, and atomic time. It also includes art pieces by Jonathon Keats @omniphonix and @lawoodgate which call into question the bureaucratic, nationalized, and linear notions of time. The design took inspiration from Alan Lightman's stories in his book "Einstein's Dreams."

Meet featured artist Daniel Toretsky! These drawings published in Gashmius Volume 6 come from a project titled “Shtetl Walks”.
‘The memory of the shtetls is preserved in memory books, compiled by refugees after the war to include lists of former inhabitants, photos, stories, and in all cases, a map drawn entirely by recall. After coming across an atlas of these maps early in the pandemic, the artist developed a drawing game to satisfy his quarantine-induced wanderlust: he drew a meandering path through the shtetl, as if he had just gotten off the train and wanted to explore. Along the path, he identified five points of interest and then overlaid a grid of words: one axis with Jewish rituals, the other axis with things that had happened after the Holocaust. Each point of interest fell at the random intersection of two words on the grid, for example: mikveh (a ritual bath), and the Bernie Sanders campaign. He then redrew a map of the town, incorporating the rituals and contemporary phenomena. The result is a form of Judeo-futurism, blending past, present, and future to imagine what might have come to exist if the shtetls had been allowed to thrive into the present day, and simultaneously represent the possibility of a thriving diasporic Jewish future.’

Join us tomorrow @ 7pm for the kick-off to the 9th annual CWP Object Movement Puppetry Festival at Dixon Place!
This year’s opening weekend features performances like “WHALE MEAT” by @daniel.toretsky . Daniel is an exhibit designer, artist, and licensed architect living in Brooklyn, NY. In his art Daniel explores climate futures through speculative installations and ecological myth-making, often informed by his upbringing in the Yiddish arts revival.
Adapted from the apocalyptic demise of Leviathan, devoured by the righteous at the end of days, this show opens with a solo man eating meat - whale meat - from a takeout container while swiping a dating app on a large pink monitor. This show will be featured Friday @ 7pm and Saturday at 2pm & 7pm, join us for this celebration of puppetry!

"My uncle had this suitcase since I was a child, and now it is mine. Hinged with tin from airplane wings, and made from thick black leather that once upholstered an old wagon, and worn-soft red leather of the mishkan, the portable sanctuary of the desert, and before that, the animal skin that a girl slung around herself, used to carry her baby on her back, and when that was over, gather such other things that were useful. The space within the suitcase was made before the first day of creation, when gods first act was tsimtsum: to create empty space, and shape herself as a container around it, to hold the world and carry it through time."
These are the opening words of the Hereness Wagon performance written by @porcupinejawbone Weaver and I conceived of this piece to reflect on the complexities inherent to the myths we carry throughout the Yiddish diaspora, and the solidarities they encourage.
This group show at @sproutsocietyorg with five other brilliant artists was sponsored by @theneighborhoodbk and curated by @renaneuman The beautiful photos posted here were taken by @garlandquek .
A new sketch model for my performance in the works as part of the Object Movement Residency at the @centeratwestpark ! My cohort is amazing and I feel so lucky to be a part of this community. Stay tuned for performance dates!!
Even though our group show Strange/r produced by @theneighborhoodbk and curated by @renaneuman closed this week I'm still feeling the joy of getting to exhibit The Hereness Wagon at @sproutsocietyorg and perform its little stories written by me and @porcupinejawbone . Getting to rethink this piece with Weaver was a dream, thank you for all the creativity and folkloric expertise you brought to the project! Thanks to all my friends who came out to the show, it means a lot to me!
The Hereness Wagon was originally developed as a guerilla installation at the Venice Architecture Biennale as part of @yiddishlandpavilion curated by @mariaveits and @yevgeniyfiks . It was also funded by generous grants from @youngarts and @parsonsschoolofdesign .
Thank you @garlandquek and The Neighborhood for these amazing photos!
The Hereness Wagon is unpacked from an old suitcase. The structure carries the characters and the characters each carry a story, and a sound. Read more about the project at the link in bio!
