Wow. After a truly unhinged, beautiful chapter…Monday, Jan 26th will be my last day at Genghis Cohen.
We survived crazy Christmases, we closed, we moved, we reopened. But what I’ll miss most is the people. To the staff who held it down with me and guests I’ve met, you invited me into your little Genghis community and made it feel like home.
Come hang on Monday. I’ll be behind the bar all night.
Stay tuned for news on the next thing
Super excited for this little tasty number of mine that just hit the menu @thepressclubgrill . Featuring @wildturkey and @woodycreekdistillers bourbon, piri piri, watermelon, cacao and peach. Pop by for an early taste of summer.
This is my sister, Ally. She passed yesterday.
I have been caught off guard by the flood of emotion that has hit me this week. My relationship with Ally was not a traditional one. How could it be? I am profoundly sad that I’m never to say I deeply knew her. But this is what I do know. She was a true Merer. She loved music. She went out listening to Katy Perry, a true fire work. She was an agent of chaos. The more bumps, cracks, and potholes you ran her wheelchair over, the better. She snorted when she laughed (let’s be honest, that’s the Oberman in her.) But what’s always stuck with me is that she looks like me or rather, I look like her. I look like my sister.
There are so many dear memories surrounding Ally and the gatherings that centered around her. I remember what seemed like never ending car rides to visit her in the Catskills. I remember the family eating cold Chicken Holiday picnic style. I remember @joshmerer and @bmerer winning the annual egg toss contest and @amy_abraham8592 always winning the hula hoop competition. And who could forget the infamous ordeal of Amy being chased by that pig. I remember Dusty, the full grown horse and the most epic pirate ship vs. castle playground that ever existed at her home. Miles for Matheny is where I first met @jerrykbiker who has become such an integral and beloved part of our family. That same place is where Josh and I dressed like Christmas elves and danced to the Boys Are Back In Town for all the residents. Sorry, couldn’t find the photo evidence.
These are the memories I’ll always hold and they are really good ones. Rest easy Ally.
Alright. Last night, about half way through his set, Elton stops the show to talk a little about New York City. He says he has a song about NYC and that this time will be his last time EVER performing it live.
He plays one of my favorites, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. Not a dry eye in the house.
Wow. When your friends throw you a surprise cat shower… I don’t even have the words! Thanks @kendrakicks , @lundgrenjl , @thom.chun , and @alpunk94 for being the best people ever! Slide for cat content
Hello friends. As some of y’all know, my time at Dear Irving at Hudson is coming to an end. I’ve been with this bar since it’s inception almost 3 years ago and with the company for over 6 years. This is my home and these are my people. I must first off thank some of these people. First off, @n_d_w_b , one of my best friends and greatest teachers. Thank you for putting up with my shit for 4(?!?) years. To @gingerrickey , @glass.ware , and @justinbelmondo . The three of you have been my bar mentors through this epic saga. I get nowhere without you. And of course, @jakebehindbars , @oscar_carbonelk , @jerr_terserr , @selmasaur , @mstriph , @katie.sips , @kasmarbo , and @sirtenshi . You are part of the core of a team that took on midtown and kicked its ass. Let’s be real, it kicked our asses just as much. You are and will always be the best bar team. #gibsongang. I’m excited for my new journey (more details to come soon!) but will first say so long to my current one.
Anywho! This Wednesday, September 1st, will be my last official day behind the stick. I invite any and all to brave midtown and come have some drinks on my last night! See y’all soon!
