Project Spotlight | Bunker House | Dalman Architects
Conceived for an exceptionally isolated site, Bunker House is designed to disappear. The dwelling is embedded into the landscape, camouflaged by surrounding vegetation and shaped to emit no visible light. Its orientation, form and materiality were carefully resolved to meet strict environmental constraints while delivering a permanent, highly liveable home.
Internally, exposed concrete defines both structure and atmosphere, creating a sense of solidity and calm. The plan is intentionally simple, with living spaces at the core and private rooms arranged either side to minimise waterproofing complexity and maximise long-term durability. Subtle daylight enters through clerestory glazing and a recessed façade, ensuring comfort without compromising the surrounding dark sky environment.

Yesterday, the Honourable Louise Upston celebrated the grand opening of The Clements, Cambridge’s newest 5-star boutique hotel, reimagined from the historic Masonic Hotel.

Bunker House - Our Cover Story
An astronomical feat amid the striking desolate landscapes of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, Bunker House invites guests to relax in true solitude. The house is completely invisible from the peak of 1031-metre Mount John above, which the team at @dalmanarchitects consider one of the project's greatest successes.
Built into the hillside, the largely subterranean modern home is a lesson in respect for the environment, marrying brutalism and luxury. With exposed precast concrete, zero light pollution, and a camouflaged tussock-covered roof, Bunker House is designed to disappear into its rugged surrounds. Inside, a minimalist layout balances resilience with comfort, anchored by a multipurpose living space and flanked by two ensuite bedrooms.
