P11 in the W pro field, 6 days, 218ish miles, 35kft or so climbing, 10 miles no saddle, 11 miles with a tire saddle, 3 flats, 1 sprained ankle, road rash, 1 man named Joe pulling me out of the top of a tree after falling off the side of a mountain (idk how else to describe it b/c that’s what happened). Endless steep AF climbs, equally endless, rowdy, rugged, and lightning fast descents. And…hiking. Wild. So many things went wrong @breckepic . So many things went right. A test of mental, physical strength, and preparation. Even more so a test of using the resources around you and embracing the suck. The fitness and mental fortitude (via @kurt_perham ) to finish all 6 days with shot legs from standing for 21 miles. The aid team working with me to make a seat. The OTHER racers who were willing to stop and help with my flats. NOBODY finishes tough things alone. I got exactly what I needed from Breck. Year after year, the accumulation of flare-ups from multiple forms of tick-borne disease has caused irreversible neuromuscular damage. My symptoms are very meningeal in nature. It’s made life unpredictable and at times unbearable. I have been overly philosophical about the purpose of sport since I was 22, knowing at any moment none of this is guaranteed. There is no ā€œcomeback.ā€ I exist in the space between incredibly competitive and knowing it’s all just a game. All we REALLY have in life are our bodies and community. Treat them well. Sport has been the mode that helps me remember to cherish & nourish these things. To find a way to keep trying, in all avenues of life, simply because trying is living. Sport also isn’t everything to me, it can’t be. Long races aren’t my thing, and I wanted to race Breck to remind myself of this bigger picture. There were moments on that course that felt truly horrifying, where I traded ā€œwoooosā€ and ā€œoh Sh*tsā€ seconds after each other, moments my lungs thought they’d explode, and moments of awe. This was real backcountry mountain biking, & I’m so proud of that belt buckle. Time for CX. šŸ“ø 1: @eddieclarkmedia 2 @hanson_images

I’m racing @breckepic . Apologies to the bike community that already knows what this is, but many of my friends don’t race. It’s a 6 day MTB race in Breckenridge CO. Mostly above 10k feet somewhere around 220 miles with 35-40k feet of climbing. ā€œA race of attrition,ā€ they say. Not just ā€œhow fit are you?ā€ But how well you can accept the lows, eat, hydrate, recover, sleep and not break your bike. I planned a lot for this race. I however, did not plan for the screw that keeps your bike seat in place, to go Au Revoir down the Colorado trail. After getting slammed by almost 6000ft of vert yesterday, my legs and nutrition strategy were going very well today. At mile 20 after about 3000ft of climbing, you then descend a lightning fast, dusty, loose, Colorado trail. That is also when I heard a lil jingle jangle and saw my bike seat fly off. WTF do I do with 21 miles & over 2000ft of climbing left with some steep AF single track & no bike seat? For about 10 mins while descending I panicked, slid out twice slicing my knee & breaking my bike computer mount. Total shit show. Then, the plan. Calm the F down. Ppl are doing this with all sorts of different challenges. The next aide station is in 10 miles. Descend quick but smooth & CONTROLLED. I’ll have to stand the entire time, don’t blow up. Aide station mile 30. Obviously no one had the screw for my bike seat lol. 11 miles to the finish with 3 nasty but smaller climbs. I packed a spare tire in my drop bag, can we turn that into a seat? The aide team took out some zip ties and quickly/ brilliantly made me a tire seat. Chef’s kiss. I wish I knew who they were. Angels. I cannot tell you how comfortable it is to sit on a tire after standing for 10 miles on the Colorado trail. I finished and honestly didn’t lose too much time. As the adrenaline wore off I can now feel every sore muscle and all the road rash that will make tomorrow’s 6000+ feet an extra doozy. We cross the continental divide at 12000ft. I am expecting everything to hurt like hell. Eat, drink, pedal will be on repeat for several hours. I think the ā€œif there’s a will, there’s a way,ā€ energy is on my side.

I needed a rest week after all of the different forces that traveled through my body the last few weeks. My first Enduro race at Powder Ridge @easternstatescup . Crow Hill XCO via @racedayxc . A beautifully built course with relentlessly technical single track šŸ™‚. Wednesday night short track #barnburner training series. Sprinkled in with some ice cream rides and ripping up my lawn with my new tiller. I’m smoked. Recovering. It was worth it. New friends. Community. Growth through scary stuff. Fitness and hopefully a green lawn. Thank you to @fastsplits @kurt_perham @pbmcoaching @endurancethreads and myself at @powerphysicaltherapyllc for keeping some chronic injuries at bay (that is most conceded thing I’ve ever said but gotta promote my business šŸ™ƒ) Bought some pics! 1. @andrewsantoro_ 2. @tylerbakerphoto #mountainbikelife #mountainbiking #mtb #physicaltherapy #newengland #racing #race #crosscountry #enduro #lawn

This year I made some different goals for myself as an athlete. The cliff notes version is diversifying my skill sets, community integration and truly having fun (as defined by me versus what others have suggested is supposed to be fun). Of course having robust fitness and a competitive drive are still a central focus, but I am at a place in life right now I need a reminder to be curious in sport, rather than chase results. I got my arm twisted quite hard this year to help coach in the @neyc.league . It felt like a bit more than I could chew while trying to manage my own fitness, evolving personal life and growing my physical therapy practice. So far, it has ended up being one of the best arm twists I’ve had in quite awhile. Seeing wave after wave of kids at the start line at @racerockhard secret squirrel gave me chills (amazing @kelly.catale & @iammikeoc ). Access to sport, IMO, is one of life’s greatest privileges and if done right, makes more compassionate and resilient humans. It is well known that voluntarily doing activities that are a little scary and physically demanding makes other issues in life more manageable to navigate. I started this year with uphill ski racing, and I’ll be doing some other new events that will ask me to get out of my comfort zone. Seeing a bunch of nervous kids find the courage to start a mountain bike race, many for their first time, was exactly the thing I didn’t know I needed to see to stay curious and be brave. Thank you @kurt_perham as always for the coaching. And thank you @fastsplits and @endurancethreads for ALL your support!
