Recap on Cynthia Abila SS26.
The Bridge That Divides Us is a collection shaped by women.
By the stories we carry.
By history, memory, rhythm, and the quiet power that travels through us.
From interactive handwoven Njam fabric to hand-drawn motifs, painted symbols, raffia, beadwork, and locally dyed cotton ā every look tells a part of who we are.
A reminder that women stand on many bridges.
Between past and future.
Between calm and fire.
Between what we inherit and what we choose.
Twenty-one looks.
Twenty-one ways a woman can exist in strength, softness, culture, and movement.
Thank you for walking this journey with us. The bridge is long, but we walk it together.

Our heroes arrived with nothing but the weight of loss. They are Women displaced by conflict, living in makeshift camps, carrying silent stories on their backs.
But over the past week, those same hands dipped fabric into wax, dyed patterns with purpose, and began to shape something new: A FUTURE
At Cynthia Abila Studios, weāre not just making clothes. Weāre weaving sustainability into every thread and building a circular economy that includes women who were once excluded.
Through our batik training program, these women are learning traditional textile production skills. Not just to survive but to become artisans, partners, and changemakers because sustainability isnāt just about the planet.
Itās about people.
And when women rise, communities follow.
This isnāt charity.
This is legacy.
This is circular fashion, Reimagined.

I have always been fascinated by craftsmanship and the skill of hand weaving in textile production. This craft is one of the most ancient surviving craft in the world.
Our new SS21 collection...I803 features a range of exciting quality hand woven fabrics (NJAM) with rousing colours and textures predominantly made out of silk and cotton.
Every pattern has a story. Each colour has a history and the textures represent our ethnicity. This collection and the ambience is a story of ethnic and global history renewed into a millennial folk tale.
Through the design processes, we have been able to develop our own unique blends of colours, warp threads and wafts mixed with our elegant, flamboyant black history and other sustainable fixtures. The raw imperfect beauty of the African artisanal nature have also been captured and cannot be overlooked. Generally, this is the heartbreaking story of the forgotten but also a reminder of who we are and an opportunity to resuscitate the lost skills and celebrate the artisans that made this journey possible.
A special appreciation to all the women who were part of this project from the different parts of Nigeria. Your hardwork and dedication can never be underestimated.

Behind every thread is a hand.
And behind every hand is a story.
The Weight of Handwork is a meditation on craftsmanship, labour, and the invisible human touch behind every garment.
This collection honours the beauty of making slowly. The patience of weaving. The intimacy of stitching. The evidence of touch is left behind in every surface, seam, and texture.
Because true craftsmanship is not only seen.
It is felt.

Collection Title: The weight of handwork
A Collection by Cynthia Abila Studios.
In an age of speed, handwork becomes resistance.
The Weight of Handwork is a meditation on craftsmanship, labour, and the invisible human touch behind every garment. Through woven textiles, reconstructed denim, linen, cotton blends, and artisanal finishing techniques, we present a collection that honours the slowness of making and the beauty of imperfections.
Every stitch carries evidence of the hand.
Every woven surface carries time.
Every garment carries memory.
The collection draws inspiration from traditional weaving practices and the emotional language of handmade textiles, exploring how fabrics can preserve stories, identities, and generational knowledge. Handwoven materials meet distressed denim and softened natural fibres in silhouettes that feel tactile, grounded, and sculptural.
Rather than conceal process, The Weight of Handwork reveals it. Frayed edges, layered textures, visible seams, raw finishes, and irregular surfaces are intentionally preserved as symbols of humanity. The garments are not designed to appear untouched; they are designed to feel lived in, worked through, and deeply felt.
At its core, the collection reflects the physical and emotional weight carried by artisans, particularly women whose labour often remains unseen despite shaping the cultural and material histories of fashion. Through weaving, stitching, dyeing, reconstructing, and hand-finishing, the collection becomes a tribute to the dignity of craft and the communities that sustain it.
Rooted in sustainability and African textile heritage, the collection continues the brandās commitment to conscious creation through local sourcing, recycled materials, and handcrafted production methods. Here, luxury is not defined by excess, but by intention, by the time, patience, and skill required to make something by hand.
The Weight of Handwork asks us to reconsider value in contemporary fashion.
To see cloth not as disposable but as cultural evidence.
To recognize craftsmanship not as decoration but as legacy.
Because behind every thread is a hand.
And behind every hand is a story.

African motifs are more than beautiful design elements. Many of them were created to communicate ideas, beliefs, emotions, and stories without words.
Long before fashion became trend-driven, motifs served as visual storytelling tools across different African communities.
A single symbol could represent strength, fertility, wisdom, unity, spirituality, leadership, or protection.
Some motifs were inspired by nature, rivers, leaves, animals, the sun, the moon. Others came from everyday life, ancestral symbols, folklore, or proverbs passed down through generations.
That is why certain prints feel deeply expressive even before you understand their meaning. The motifs carry intention.
In African fashion, design has always gone beyond appearance. Every line, curve, and repeated symbol has the power to hold memory and meaning.
What makes African prints timeless is not just the colour or craftsmanship. It is the stories hidden inside the motifs themselves.
Have you ever worn a print simply because a particular motif spoke to you?

What if your outfit could carry history?
Long before gold became currency, cowrie shells moved across continents. They were symbols of wealth, trade, and sacred femininity.
They weren't chosen for beauty alone. They were chosen for what they meant.
Today, each cowrie in our pieces holds that same power. It is used not for decoration or adornement alone but for legacy and history.
Fashion that remembers asks a question: What questions are you asking with the pieces you wear?
