🤯 Insane new trailer work for Netflix's dark and twisted, boundary-pushing comedy series "Bad Thoughts". Got to create a bonkers, mind-bending, twisted, trailerized, future-psychedelic horror remix of ā€œGoin’ Out of My Headā€ the Little Anthony and the Imperials 1964 classic. Music needed to feel like a mental unraveling and spiraling into madness, where the sweet and nostalgic song paired with the surreal feverdream of the main character’s mind would evoke a sense of uneasy emotional contrast. We trailerized it by literally breaking the track apart, time-stretching, detuning, twisting the soul classic into something that feels both nostalgic and dangerous. That’s part of the unease, the comfort of such a familiar song makes the insanity hit even harder. Like Tom Segura’s comedy, it starts with something ordinary and then drags it into a surreal place, leveraging what's familiar and then destabilizing it, contrasting normal and the extreme.

An official selection of BHFF, ā€œEvil, Iā€ will feature in ā€œShorts: Head Tripā€, a category that spotlights short form innovation in genre-bending horror. Love this! Innovation in genre bending is where my music studio lives and breathes every day of every week! The music I created for ā€œEvil, Iā€ is a resonant, experimental, hyper modern score featuring glitched and twisted elements of ultra modern pop musical language and sounds juxtaposed against traditional modern scoring elements to create the films cinematic score language. The recontextualization and genre-bending of this pop sound language breaks into some psychic Lynchian pop mass consciousness when added into the film score's modern language of strings, synths, spectralism, and humming ancestral hand drums alongside touches of ambient, noise, and IDM. NEW WORK. šŸŽ¹ šŸ’æšŸŽ»šŸŽ„ Extremely excited to have composed and contributed the musical score for the incredible new short film ā€œEvil, Iā€ by director Vanessa Beletic. My team and I approach every score in the studio like making a new album - creating a unique musical sound world born from and deeply aligned to the narrative and emotional depths of the film, and digging deep into the psychological effect of the music and sounds on the audience. The score we created for ā€œEvil, Iā€ is resonant, deep psychic chrysalis. ⁠ A hyper modern, supernatural young adult thriller, the experimental and hyper modern score features glitched and twisted elements of ultra modern pop musical language and sounds juxtaposed against traditional modern scoring elements to create the films cinematic score language. The recontextualization and twisting of this pop sound language breaks into some psychic Lynchian pop mass consciousness when added into the film score's modern language of strings, synths, spectralism, and humming ancestral hand drums alongside touches of ambient, noise, and IDM. ⁠ Can’t wait to share the actual score and sounds and more insight into the development of the score in future posts, but we created a bunch of amazing music and got to include some rad sounds from @slateandash and @spitfireaudio including finally getting to feature the insane Ondes Martenot freak out sounds from the Bernard Hermann toolkit 🤯⁠ The film's supernatural thriller is blended with folklore and mysticism about a Haitian-American girl with latent ancestral powers reclaiming her voice and a little bit of ā€œF around and find out!ā€. It was created as part of the prestigious @americanfilminstitute ’s Director’s Workshop For Women+ (DWW+), and begins it’s festival run at the Academy qualifying @hollyshortsfilmfestival in Hollywood this Sunday, 8/11. Akron/Family’s Self Titled album came out 19 years ago today on Young God Records. We recorded the foundation of the record in a 1000 square ft, open loft off the Halsey L Train Stop in East Williamsburg Brooklyn where the whole band lived at the time using a Zoom digital 4 track, an SM 58 and Fruity Loops on a Dell Computer. We sent these demos on CDR to Michael Gira the founder of Young God Records who loved them, and after coming to see us play several times at Pete’s Candy Store signed us to YGR. Pete’s is where the photo was taken on the inside of the CD jewel case. Michael produced the record with us, helping us to weave together new material with the earlier material. We recorded the new tracks as well as overdubs and vocals on the earlier material with Jason at Seizures Palace for several weeks including a session with Nate Wooley a trumpeter who’s playing we loved and who also worked with Ryan at Angelika Kitchen in the East Village. We also sent a close up field recording of ourselves walking on grass in Trout Run Pennsylvania to Greg Kelley of Nmperign, and he and Bhob Rainey played over that as well for one of the tracks on the record. Michael preferred when we sang but was generally amused by us. And then after the recording sessions and some later overdubs at my then new apartment on Lorimer St, we went to Trout to mix with Bryce Goggin. I’m thinking all of this was 2003/2004. After the album was finished we helped Michael record his next Angels of Light record called ā€œSings Other Peopleā€ in the downtime before Akron/Family ST came out Spring 2005 and then went on tour with Akron/Family opening for Angels of Light and also performing as the backing band for Angels of Light. I think maybe the release show for the S/T record in NYC was at Tonic. Transforming a Beethoven theme through multiple genres and a Gold Clio @clioawards šŸ„‡! Very excited that the trailer I scored for the animated @netflix series Cyberpunk won a Gold Clio for Animated TV Series Trailer. Fun timing too as I keep running into the super fun @jonbatiste transforming Beethoven video with Chris Wallace. On this Cyberpunk trailer we got to take Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and transform it through quick cuts of a multitude of sub-genres, from shredding black metal to cyberpunk to dark ambient, pop punk and more metal, and then a rollicking orchestral ending with blazing double bass drum. All cut to the most insane animation. STUDIO WIP āœļø | Classicalism is a new creative project I’ve been working on in the studio this year. Creating hyper modern versions of classical works using the language of future music. Sort of like a 21st Century Switched on Bach. This is an excerpt from Bach’s Sonata [No. 3] in E major, BWV 1016. I’ve also been working on some pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms as well. Will share some more of these.
