In Staying with the Trouble, Donna Haraway proposes that it matters what thoughts think thoughts, what worlds world worlds, and therefore also what knots knot knots. We read What Knots Knot Knots as a string-figuring of  entangled, mutually implicating histories that shape the northern provinces of the Netherlands. What Knots Knot Knots reads archives, landscapes and collective memories as interconnected knots: overlapping layers of colonial infrastructures, knowledge systems, migration histories and institutional practices that continue to structure the present. What Knots Knot Knots is a site responsive exhibition that stretches across four cultural institution. In Groningen, the focus lies on archives, knowledge production and systems of representation; in Friesland, on maritime networks and institutional memory; and in Drenthe, on migration histories and the social and spatial afterlives of colonial structures. 🚀 ENG: We warmly welcome Musoke Nalwoga as co-curator for our 2026–2027 programme! As a curator, writer, and researcher, she focuses on photography and other forms of lens-based media. Her practice moves at the intersection of embodied knowledge, making, archiving, and the political power of images, with particular attention to technology and materiality. Together with our director, she will be shaping our artistic programme PLAY in the coming years, across three closely interlinked trajectories: What Knots Knot Knots (2026), the pre-biennale Thinking Hands(2026), and the biennale PLAY (2027). 🚀 Musoka Nalwoga @cyborgtruffel Photo by @jantinatalsma #cocurator #noorderlichtbiennial #whatknotsknotknots #thinkinghands #play

✨ In this video, we invite you to listen in on a thoughtful exchange between Thato Toeba @thatotoeba , one of the artists shaping this exhibition, and Musoke Nalwoga @cyborgtruffel , researcher, curator & institution builder. Together, they explore the making of Tools for Conviviality II, an exhibition, developed in collaboration with our neighbors @hiphophuis , that transforms MELLY into a space of gathering, listening, and shared experience. From a 5,000-strong vinyl collection cared for by Dimitri Madimin and Philip Powell, to second-hand furniture selected by Thato that carries its own histories, the exhibition reimagines MELLY as a lived-in, communal environment. Thato also shares insights into their artistic process of designing a custom console for the curated vinyl selections, approached as a three-dimensional collage. This conversation offers a deeper look into how sound, storytelling, and everyday objects come together to create a sense of common ground. ⏳ Don’t miss your chance! It’s the last few days to experience Tools for Conviviality II before we prepare for our next exhibition, opening October 11th. Join us at the closing party this Saturday September 13th. 🎥: Watch the full version of this conversation on YouTube. Link in bio.
