Coming soon to our YouTube channel: an interview with artist Cihad Caner on his solo exhibition (Re)membering the riots in Afrikaanderwijk in 1972 or guest, host, ghos-ti at Kunstinstituut Melly. In this exhibition, Cihad explores the largely overlooked 1972 riots in Rotterdam’s Afrikaanderwijk, where guest workers were targeted — a moment in Dutch history that remains underrepresented in collective memory. Through film, sculptural installations, and community-centered activations, Cihad revisits these events to question how memory is shaped, erased, or retold. Using reenactment and multilingual storytelling, he connects past and present: from the neighborhood’s colonial naming history to ongoing struggles around gentrification. His practice challenges the politics of image-making and invites us to reconsider what — and whose — stories are remembered. Video by: @loeskorten

In (Re)membering the Riots in Afrikaanderwijk in 1972 or guest, host, ghos-ti, @cihadcaner  delves into a largely forgotten chapter of Dutch history: the 1972 riots in Rotterdam’s Afrikaanderwijk neighborhood, during which guest workers were targeted. Using the riots as a focal point, Cihad expands his research to explore the neighborhood’s naming in commemoration of the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa, as well as the pressing challenges of gentrification it faces today. This project explores the nature of memory—how we remember, how subjective experiences shape collective memory, and the role of reenactment in bringing the past into the present. Featuring film, sculptural installations, a space for public activations, and tours of the Afrikaanderwijk conducted in languages widely spoken in the area, Cihad delves into the fluidity of memory, recognizing it as an ever-changing phenomenon. Using CGI and motion capture, the artist creates hybrid monsters inspired by historical and pop-cultural figures – one carries the artist’s own voice and gestures. The narrative blends social theory with personal reflections, making the project as much about lived experience as ideas. You are invited to explore! 🔥 🖼️ Cihad Caner. Cihad Caner’s monsters are not silent. They speak, sing, and express subjectivity, challenging how the ‘Other’ is shaped by media images and stereotypes. They invite us to turn hostility into hospitality. Start the new year with a visit to the KINDL! 👋 🖼️ Cihad Caner. The etymology of the word monster allows for a double reading: what do Cihad Caner´s monsters reveal in “Demonst(e)rating the Untamable Monster“ – and what do they warn against?
