On show in CPT! Thato Toeba’s 𝘴𝘦𝘩𝘭𝘢𝘩𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘶𝘬𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘢 𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘦, their first solo show in the Cape Town gallery. 🔥 Musoke Nalwoga, a writer, curator and Toeba’s interlocutor, observes: ‘A bush, aflame, not consumed searches at the intersection of modernity, nationalism and traditionalism, looking for enduring cracks. Reading the Southern African context as a geography burning under siege. Unassuming crowds in cracks re-bound by circumstantial kinship. A death rattle, a wailing village rushes through your heart and breaks it. Know that you are alive now. In eight acts, Toeba enters the photograph, falling into it like a miner drops to the depth of the earth, digging for histories unbound. On their way down, Toeba reveals a trail of silhouettes and mirrors in photomontage that spill into installations. A history, remade.’ On show until 29 Nov! @thatotoeba

It was good to see you all for 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 #𝟳𝟯: 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗹𝗮 by @thatotoeba x @morenaleraba . Thursday 18 September! Thato Toeba and Morena Leraba present 𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘢 𝘏𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘭𝘢 @burostedelijk For this iteration of the curated programme and ongoing process 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 #52: 𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥, Thato Toeba and Morena Leraba, two pioneering voices from Lesotho converge to explore the intersections of sound, memory, and visual culture. Thato Toeba brings their signature practice of iconoclastic collage and mixed-media assemblage into dialogue with Morena Leraba’s genre-defying fusion of traditional Sesotho music and contemporary electronic soundscapes. This collaboration emerges from shared geographical and cultural roots in Maseru, Lesotho, yet represents divergent artistic trajectories that illuminate the complexity of contemporary African diasporic creative expression. Together, these artists create a multisensory exploration of what it means to inhabit and reimagine Lesotho from both within and beyond its borders. Their manifestation at Buro Stedelijk questions conventional modes of exhibition and interaction, inviting audiences into an intimate creative process that challenges museological practices through the lens of Southern African cultural production. Doors open: 6:30pm Performance starts: 6:45 Click the link in bio for your free ticket! - @burostedelijk @thatotoeba @morenaleraba

Congratulations to the 2025 FNB Art Prize winner: Thato Toeba. Thato Toeba was born in 1990 in Maseru where they live. They are an artist, lawyer and social sciences researcher working with mixed-media photomontage and assemblage. Using collage and assemblage, they bring together photos, textures and materials to tell layered stories about identity, power and history. Their images don’t follow one clear path. Instead, they hold many meanings at once, asking us to slow down, look closer and think more deeply about what we’re seeing.
