Believe it or not, the amp I use for most of my YouTube videos isn’t an amp at all, it’s a pedal: the Iridium, from @strymonengineering . In this case I was using it with just a little bit of reverb from the NightSky, but that’s it. This is probably the straightest tone I ever use (and the straightest playing), but I wouldn’t change anything about it, at any budget. For more of my thoughts on why pedals can beat real amps at their own game, watch my latest YouTube video, PEDALS THAT ARE AMPS: HOW TO HE CREATIVE. Also BTW the solo here is an alternate take that I wrote for my friend @blakeful , on his song “NSA.” The final version is way more out-there and WTF, and the song rules, so make sure you find it on your preferred streaming etc.
Dear everybody, thank you for helping my YouTube channel get over a million views. I really appreciate it. I'm doing an AMA livestream on YouTube later today if you wanna come celebrate. Link in my IG story. 🥊♥️
This is what it sounds like if you embrace the feedback from the new Placeholder reverb from @fairfieldcircuitry —the result is a ghostly, resonant haze that is unusual for a reverb but not unusual at all for @fairfieldcircuitry . Halfway through, I take a solo with the Plasma pedal from @gamechanger_audio , which is an Ultra tier pedal for me. Both it and the Placeholder are exhibits in my latest YouTube video, ANALOG vs DIGITAL: WHAT REALLY MATTERS? Thanks as always to @slice_of_this for help with the animation. #glitch #lofi #shred #poplife

The SL-2 Slicer from @bossinfoglobal is a personal fave, but the choppy rhythms it creates are so in your face that it basically always needs to be locked to the tempo. Fortunately it automatically detects and syncs to MIDI clock data, which is how I was able to re-create this late-90s classic. For more information about whether MIDI could be the right choice for your family, watch my latest YouTube video, MIDI: HOW TO BE CREATIVE. Even though I don’t consider myself a good keyboard player, I use keyboards and synths in my music all the time, thanks to various dirty tricks that are available with MIDI. So for instance in this cover I whipped up of “Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, most of what you’re hearing is the Vongon Replay synth and MIDI bullshit. To find out exactly what my tricks are, watch my recent YouTube video MIDI: HOW TO BE CREATIVE. Thanks as always to @slice_of_this for help with the animation. #synth #glitch #lofi #midi
The brand-new Rosetones pedal from @vongonelectronics can find notes in anything, if you use MIDI with it. In this example I’m feeding it noise from the @echofixaustralia Spring Reverb (off screen), then using a MIDI keyboard going directly into the Rosetones, forcing it to create each keyed note from the messy springy noise it’s getting in the background. For more examples of unusual ways to use MIDI, check out my latest YouTube video, MIDI: HOW TO BE CREATIVE. Here’s a mid-week jam, using the Parting pedal from @emilyharpist and @oldbloodnoise . The basic sound here is midway between a reverb and a lo-fi filter sound, and I used my middle pickup to make it sound extra mid. In the midst of it all are animations I made with the help of @slice_of_this . As usual we pulled a bunch of video game assets from the mid to late 90s. Amid everything going on in the world it’s nice to find the middle of my own little world, with the help of a great pedal and a great friendship with @emilyharpist . #mid #guitar #lofi #glitch #retro
One thing I like about using the Boss PS-6 harmonizer in YouTube videos is that it’s usually a reason to bust out the guitar playing I was obsessed with in high school, like this Randy Rhoads solo (or Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc).
In this case, the harmonizer pedal is actually in my amp’s effects loop, where it sounds best. I often hear people give advice about how pitch shifters and harmonizers are supposed to track better early in your signal chain, but in my experience, that’s not really true anymore. If you’d like to hear more about what I consider various pedal-order myths, check out my latest YouTube video, EFFECT ORDER: HOW TO BE CREATIVE.
