Getting therapeutic care isn’t easy for young adults. A 2023 study found that 3 out of 4 young adults feel embarrassed or face stigmatized reactions when discussing their mental health. This, coupled with the mental health system’s history of harm toward Black, brown, LGBTQIA+, and disabled communities, leads to a well-founded distrust in clinicians. Lack of cultural competency and the power dynamic between adults and youth only make it harder for young people to open up. But the only way to make it past these barriers is to talk about them.

The story behind this shot is INSANE! 😭 but a true testament to this project and the love it was forged in.
1. We almost scrapped this shot. We were down to the WIRE and literally had 3 weeks left before we had to turn the Final Cut to Tribeca. The team was going back and forth on what we had to cut to save time, and this ALMOST ended up on the chopping block, bc we couldn’t agree how we wanted to show Xerxes transitioning from the thoughts in his mind to snapping back to “reality” 😭 but one of our lead animators (and honestly PHENOMENAL human being) Renee Moss found the PERFECT way to visualize this sequence and we kept it!
2. This scene is ultimately was lead to Renee becoming a lead animator because when I tell you she took the Reins and really helped us make both creative and time efficient cuts?? Because of her leadership we meet the deadline AND made a beautiful, cohesive piece of art. I’m indebted to her forever (which is why I need yall to rent this short film so I can pay her to keep working with us!!!)
3. This shot actually has a good chunk of our animation team as the “students” 🥹 (and even me! Can you guess which one I am? 👀) it’s such a beautiful Easter egg and memory the wonderful people who helped make this dream a reality ❤️
